MTN claims 50%-plus market share of active mobile data users in Nigeria.
10 million Nigerians became mobile data users in June, according to new figures from the country's regulator, which show that MTN leads the market by some way.

Nigeria was home to 57.7 million mobile data subscriptions in June, of which 48.3 million were active, the Nigerian Communications Commission's (NCC's) latest numbers show, as reported by national newspaper This Day. A month earlier there were 38.3 million active mobile data users out of a total base of 44.6 million.

That 10 million increase in the number of active users over the course of just one month suggests the number of mobile data subscriptions will treble before the end of the year, Tony Ojobo, director of public affairs at the NCC told This Day.

By way of comparison, voice subscribers in the country currently stand at 117 million.

Nigeria's biggest mobile operator MTN unsurprisingly has the biggest share of the active data subscriptions with 24.5 million, or 50.7% of the total.

There is little to pick between Airtel and Globacom, with 9.2 million and 9.1 million data subscriptions respectively, while Etisalat's 5.1 million data subs put it in fourth place. Nigeria's handful of CDMA operators have fewer than 200,000 data subscribers between them.

According to the newspaper, Ojobo attributed the increase in data subscriptions to rising smartphone penetration, especially among young people, and to the growth in online activity in general; Nigerians are increasingly shopping online and the number of government activities available via the Internet is also growing.
