Issue 35 --------------------------------------------------------- I acted like a big brother would frowning back at Chichi's uncaring and nonchalant reception, she stopped and looked back at me saying "what now?", I was surprised at her reply which got me angry immediately, I replied "what do you mean Chichi...are you in your right senses?...am talking to you and your walking away...are you alright?", I was already steaming in anger dropping my bag like I wanted to go into a wrestling match with her, she looked back and said "oh!!...I should start dancing around the whole street singing my senior brother who left us for over two years has finally returned home, then Papa should organise a party in respect to that abi? You must be joking, if you do not like my reception bro...that's your problem..this is not the prodigal son story", I had already reached the apex of my anger as I couldn't stand my kid sister, a nineteen year old girl speaking to me without any respect...I got close to her out of anger and gave her a damaging slap on the face strong enough to take her to the ground, I grabbed her by the hair and smashed her head on the stool that stood beside a 3seater couch, I smashed her fore head continuously on the stool and didn't care if her skull would break and she'll end up dead, I smashed with all my strength without stopping...I snapped out of my silly imagination when Chichi slammed the door to her bedroom, I stood at the centre of the sitting room looking around like it was a place I have never seen, I brought out two tablets from my pocket and threw it in my mouth, I proceeded to my supposed room but it had been cleared, it appeared like they never wanted me back in the house, I dropped my bag in a corner and went back to the living room, I sat on the couch and soon laid my head on the chair's arm, it was obvious Chichi was home alone before I joined her but the sounds from the kitchen alerted my already weak body that they were here, I couldn't keep my eyes opened any more as they were way too heavy to be held, I closed my eyes and unconscious darkness followed soon afterwards. I heard echoes of my mother's voice coming from the kitchen, slowly I stood up and walked to the kitchen, I stopped at the kitchen entrance because of what I saw that created little fright, a dark circle like a whirl wind was in the kitchen blowing mildly, it looked like a vortex leading to another world, my mother's voice came from inside and I had no choice but to check it out, it got colder as I got closer to the black vortex, I put my left leg in and I was sunk in like a force from the other side sucked me in...I fell to the bare ground feeling pains all over my body, I gradually stood up to see where the strange window led me, I looked around and it took my brain less than a second to recognise my apartment's sitting room in Asaba, fear caught me immediately as I quickly turned back so I could dash back in to the vortex but my mother's call for help stopped me, I turned back and called out to her but she could only whisper "Help me John....", she sounded like she was tired and had no more energy left in her, I tiptoed to my kitchen to check if she was help captive in there but Mama Sunday was waiting for me, the rage in her eyes said a lot and the huge syringes in her hand explained more, I gradually stepped backwards since I already knew what she was capable of doing, I slowly took steps backwards praying she doesn't attack me, suddenly my back was stopped by something that felt like some one, I slowly turned my head and it was Doctor Eugene who was standing right in front of me, his broken head was still dripping blood as his eyes were totally coloured black. I quickly decided to run back to the vortex but Nnenna was waiting for me with her axe, her face was so terrifying that I couldn't even scream, suddenly Onome called out my name from behind "John....come and join us my love..." she said, she had one of my shirt wrapped around something that dropped blood every second, her intestines was dangling from her belly as she smiled at me with blood painting the whole of her mouth, her black iris put so much fear in me....I had no where to run nor did I even know what to do....I was totally cornered . Mama Sunday dashed out of the kitchen approaching me like she wanted to tear me apart, due to reflex I fell to the ground put she pounced on me like a lion on its prey....I opened my eyes as I had already fallen off the couch where I was sleeping, I just smiled thinking that I could only be haunted in my sleep, I stood up and sat back on the couch facing the television that was already turned on, it was on a supersport channel but I didn't pay attention to which supersport it was, car racing was on and I really wasn't interested., I noticed there was too much silence in the house like I was alone, I stood up and called out to Chichi but there was no response, I assumed she had gone out without telling me since she wasn't in good terms with me, I headed to the kitchen to get a cup of water, I drank from the glass cup slowly then began to sip it like it was coffee, I went back to the sitting room but I was surprised at what was showing on tv, I heard the yoruba language and I doubted it was supersport, the only channel I know that speaks yoruba was Africa Magic yoruba and that was the channel the tv had been tuned to, I was surprised and I called out to Chichi again knowing that no one came to the sitting room, silence replied me as I got closer to the tv set, suddenly the channels started changing on its own, I searched for the remote but it wasn't where it should be, I heard steps from behind me and I slowly turned around towards the sound, Eugene held the remote like he was watching tv, my legs shook as the normal look on his face changed, he looked more angry and his black iris made him look like other ghosts, Eugene had changed and it was for the worse, he walked closer to me like he wanted to attack me, I felt heat as he took a step closer to me, suddenly the front door opened and my father walked in...I felt a mild breeze blow past me and Eugene was gone...the remote was placed in its right position and I looked up to greet my father. My father looked at me without any surprise in his eyes, I could see disgust and anger all over him, the first question he asked was "where is my wife?...", I was shocked at the question, I was so stupid not to have anticipated the simple and inevitable question, but as a turned warri boy I quickly manipulated the situation, I changed my confused look and answered his question with some convincing confidence, "she said she'll be leaving tomorrow for Anambra before coming back for Lagos" I replied, my father wasn't moved at my reply instead he asked me about her phone, "...I have been calling her phone and it has always been switched off, same as yours ever since she travelled to see you...".he said. "Look, you have a whole lot of explaining to do....where is Eugene?...what put you in a hospital bed?....you decided not to come home after your youth service, is that right?....and we don't even know the nature of your job..." 2 Likes |

Issue 36 --------------------------------------------------------- Father left me standing with my mouth opened to kick start my explanation, I sat down and felt unwanted but home was the only haven I could be, I stood confused on what else todo in respect to my mother's absence but going back to Asaba was the only solution I could think of, I had a feeling that my mother was still alive and saving her was the only tantamount thing on my mind. I had deep thoughts and felt solving my problems should begin, I thought of freeing Eugene's soul by first telling his family of his demise, then I'll have to figure out how to stop other ghosts from haunting me, too many thoughts and very little time, too many deeds to be done but very limited space....I stood up and called out to Chichi but she still didn't respond, so I decided to go check her in her room. I opened the door leading to Chichi's room and found her sitting on her bed with a laptop on her laps, she had headphones on and it was so loud I could still hear the scattering sound of the music she was listening to, she took it off immediately she saw me and asked if father was back with a very expectant look on her face, I nodded my head in response and she immediately got off her bed to go see father in his room. Minutes later she started preparing dinner and I was left in the sitting room all alone, I felt neglected but I knew I was the cause, I decided to take a stroll so I don't get attacked unaware, I wore my slippers and planned on how I'll just come back from my stroll, take my dinner, swallow my pills and go to bed because leaving sleep to come on its own might be like waiting for it to snow in summer. I soon returned from my stroll and it was a little late, the noise coming from all kinds of generator sets passed the information on the absence of power, I walked in and saw father and Chichi eating their meal on the dinning table, I was too ashamed to join them but also too famished to shy away from the meal, I went close to the table where a plate was covered, I sat in front of the covered plate and opened it, I picked up the spoon beside it and started eating, I didn't raise my head so I don't engage in any conversation with dad but the truth was that the conversation was inevitable. Spoons clicked glass plates and minutes rolled by, nobody said a word as we all faced our business which was on the plate, I wasn't comfortable at all but I had to stay so I could expatiate on things that causes curiousity for my father. Not a word was altered till my father stood up from the dinning table, he turned around and faced his room saying good night, I was surprised but also relieved a little, the door to his room clattered and got shut at once, my sister stood up to clear the table while I also faced my room in silence. I dropped the mattress that stood in a corner of my room which had dust all over it that showed it has suffered from lack of usage, I dusted it with a broom and laid a bed sheet that looked clean on it, I jumped on it and dragged my bag closer so I could help my self with the pills, suddenly power went out as a result of the generator Chichi turned off, she looked the gates leading to the house entrance and the door to her room closed. Pitch darkness was all I saw as I groped in my bag for my pills, I searched the bag deeply for my sleeping pills but all I felt was a pen and my diary....my pills were gone and my eyes were very much light enough to stay till morning, my heart beat increased... I was too scared to stay awake in the darkness and the only thing that keeps me save had been taken away from me, I stood up from my bed without even knowing what to do, I put my right hand forward so it could aid me to the door, I opened the door slowly with the intention of getting a flash light from Chichi, I could walk in our sitting room with my eyes closed but the security lights from other houses reflected in to our sitting room, there was more of darkness than light but the light was enough to see a human figure and not their faces. I got out of my room heading to Chichi's when I noticed a female standing at the other side of the palour in front of the window where light reflected through, the axe in her hand made me quickly recognise that it was Nnenna, I called out to Chichi with doubts that she might not answer, I felt a soft wind on my right which was the passage leading to my father's room, I couldn't see a thing from there but I could hear a deep whispering voice coming from the darkness, footsteps followed too as it got closer, I was veru sure a ghost was in the darkness approaching me, then Nnenna's axe scrapped the ground producing a metallic noise which I prayed heard so they come out to scare them away, Mama Sunday barged out of the kitchen which was closely on my right, I knew this was definitely the end as I had no sleeping pills to put me out of consciousness, I couldn't see her face as the light was to weak to penetrate her face, I looked to my left and Doctor Eugene came out of the darkness, I was so cornered that the best thing I could do was to stand and watch them all come close and the wisest thing I thought of doing was to scream. Chichi rushed out of her room in a haste to see what the cause of the scream was but as she stood in front of her room with the door opened Nnenna attacked her in a flash leaving the axe on her neck, the movement was so fast that I could. only catch the pictures and not the motion, Chichi fell to the ground without making a sound, quickly I jumped out of their midst and faced the front door so I could get it opened, Mama Sunday with so much speed came after me and. I reacted with a very loud scream, I fell to the ground hitting my head on the metal door I just managed to open, I saw my father rush out of his room but my dizzy eyes still showed me they all disappeared at ones, I saw my father run towards Chichi while I removed the syringe Mama Sunday left on my neck, soon afterwards I passed out... Obviously it wasn't a dream like I have always encountered, I opened my eyes on the couch where I was laid to rest, the generator had supplied light in to our apartment and I saw faces of different people in our sitting room all looking devastated, my father sat on the ground shedding tears like a woman beside a body covered with an ankara material cloth, neighbours murmured to each other when suddenly someone shouted beside me saying " ....he has opened his eyes oo...", quickly my father stood up asking me what happened as he got closer to me, I sat up and didn't know what explanation to give to my father and the crowd in our sitting room, "...I heard voices coming from the sitting room and I decided to check who it was, I saw Chichi arguing with some guys in a very low tone so they wouldn't be heard, I intended on getting close so I could ask who they were and what the problem was but Chichi left them standing by the door and walked back to her room, one of them attacked her and hacked her with an axe on her neck...I ran after them but the one of them stabbed me with a syringe and that was all I could recall....." 1 Like |

Issue 37: --------------------------------------------------------- There was total silence after my cooked story, most of them had the look of disbelief as my father obviously snubbed the story, " I was outside when I heard your door open, I couldn't see what was going on due to the darkness but I could swear I heard you scream...it was your father's cry for help that made me come in here, so I doubt if any one came in here because I never saw anyone come talkless people running out..." One of our neighbours said, my heart beat raised as I wasn't ready tell anybody anything about the ghosts that hunt me, I doubted if anyone would believe the story of the fierce ghosts after my soul, "....what are you saying sir, are you saying am lying, how come there is still an axe in this house, that was the instrument they used in carrying out their dastardly act....or are you saying I killed my own sister?...why on earth will I bring such instrument home...." I replied the man in a very angry tone with tears rolling down my eyes, the man couldn't say a word as it made my father confused and not knowing who to believe. I looked at my sister's corpse with the axe that laid beside her, I wondered why Nnenna would forget her haunting weapon, I knelt beside her and opened the ankara that covered her face, Chichi was cold dead and I was still finding it hard to believe, I never had the chance to ask her what I did to have made her stale towards me, I never had the chance to tell her I was sorry for what ever I did, I never even had the chance to say goodbye even if I didn't know she'll die tonight, I was so sad feeling so much guilt for those who have died because of me, for those who have passed on because of my coward behaviour, those who passed on because of my fear for death and lack of confidence to face the problem I created myself. I knelt close to Chichi looking straight at her closed eyes as tears drooped from mine, nobody was saying a word but the sobbing from my dad make me feel more guilty, it was high time I did something to put a stop the deaths of my loved ones, suddenly Chichi opened her eyes and looked straight at me...she raised her head quickly like she was going to bite me in the face, her eyeballs had red cracked lines all around with the pupil missing, the iris was all I saw, her face was already horrible looking as she had quickly lost the beauty she had as a human, her face was already swelling up which made her look fat...I reacted quickly by jumping back looking at everybody if they saw her sudden movement, I pointed my right hand at Chichi as I stammered "....di...di...di..did you see that?...", the reaction from every other person made me look crazy, they all looked at me suspiciously because they didn't notice anything move, I shook as I struggled to stand on my feet finding it hard to believe it was an hallucination. "...John what happened to your left hand?.." My father said after noticing my struggle to stand on my feet, I just made it brief for him telling him I had a serious accident and it claimed my left hand, he still looked surprise while I also stayed scared of what I saw some few seconds ago. My father decided to call the police since I stood adamant on the same story I told so definitely it has become a crime scene and the intervention of the police would be a wise option, one of the neighbours offered to take my dad to the nearest police station while two other neighbours promised to stay with me till my father return with the police, they soon zoomed off and the three of us were left with the corpse in the sitting room. There was absolute silence in the sitting room, the only noise was that from the generator, the two other neighbours glanced at each other like I was going to attack them, there weren't really my problem as I was still trying to get a grip of my self after the horrifying incident. All of a sudden the whole bulbs in the house went off at the same time like someone changed over a switch connecting the whole wiring of the house, what made the situation very uncomfortable for us all was that the generator was still working fine outside, I stood up immediately so did one of the neighbour, I could tell in the darkness that they were terrified but they couldn't just scream out. One of them approached the front door so he could find a solution to the problem, he fought the door so he could get it opened but the it was jammed, even with the key right there he couldn't get it opened, I knew they were here and there was no way out now, they two men shouted at me asking what was going on but I was just as scared as they were so I stayed mute. They both stood by the door looking straight at Chichi's corpse on the ground, I could hear them breathe heavily as I also slowly approached them, I kept my glare at the kitchen and the dark passage where darkness was all we saw, suddenly the axe on the ground floated in the air, at the sight of this the two men screamed at the top of their voices for help, it was obvious they have never seen such in their entire life, the axe swiftly dashed in to the darkness and voices started coming from the kitchen, the men started crying while I started praying to God, for the first I was sincere in my prayer, I prayed God gave me just one more day and I'll make everything right...after my solemn prayer I expected a miracle but everything just got worse, the sound of the axe scrapping the ground from the dark passage made it known that Nnenna was on her way, one of the men decided to take a risk of escaping through the back door which was the kitchen door, I begged him not to but he pushed me against the metal door, he turned back as soon as he God to the kitchen entrance, I knew he had seen a ghost but I only wondered who it was. As the man ran for his life back from the kitchen, he missed a step and fell to the ground hitting his head hard on the centre table, he didn't stand up after the fall which gave me another scare, Mama Sunday walked out of the kitchen then I and the other neighbour knew why the man had a great fall, Mama Sunday raised her hand and threw something at me, I dodged it but it hit the man beside me, he picked up the object and it turned out to be my amputated hand, out of fear and disgust he threw it away and it landed on Chichi's corpse, there was a sudden movement from Chichi which scared the living daylight out of me...Chichi sat up with the ankara wrapper still covering her face, the man beside had already lost control of his grip, he shook to the extent that he couldn't get his phone out of his pocket, he eventually did and turned to the window beside us, there was a man standing directly outside looking straight inside at us, we couldn't see his face as there was no light strong enough to show us, the neighbour started shouting at the man telling him to help us but the man just stood there like a statue, the neighbour raised his phone and pushed a button on it so it could reflect light, he pointed the phone to the man's face and alas.....the old man from the out skirt smiled back at us, there were cracks on his face and the black iris making up his eye was terrifying enough to give a man cardiac arrest....suddenly the neighbour beside gripped my shirt by the collar asking me what was going on, I wasn't even looking at his face as I paid more attention to Chichi that was already on her feet, Mama Sunday that was approaching us and Nnenna that dragged her axe as she moved, "....answer me!!!!!" He yelled at me, I stayed silent then he suddenly nodded my forehead, I look at him and wanted to pass a comment, he nodded me again and I quickly developed a headache, he shouted again but I was too weak to reply...he nodded my forehead again and I felt very dizzy, he left my shirt and I fell to the ground and lost consciousness.... I stood bare footed on a grass land not knowing exactly where I was, I looked back and saw I was at the edge of a cliff, I tried peeping to see what was down below but the cliff was so high that all I saw was a cloudy skies below, quickly I looked away and saw. Nurse Ngozi standing in front of me, behind her sat my mother on a chair, she was surround by other ghosts who were tormenting her, "...help me John.." She cried, Onome also looked up at me and said "...oh yes John...come...come and help her...", I tried taking the first step but Ngozi pushed me off the cliff....I opened my eyes immediately I hit the ground as I felt cold water on my face....I was still on the ground where I passed out, I saw my dad asking me what happened but I was too weak to answer, I was helped up by my dad and the police men he came with.... 1 Like |
