Cross River Politician Commits Suicide Over Huge Debts by olokfor: 7:51pm On Aug 08, 2013
A councillor aspirant in Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State has reportedly committed suicide because he incurred heavy debts in the process of consulting kingmakers and electorate for the September 21 Council elections in the state which he was eventually schemed out of the contest by other interested groups.

He is reported to have developed undiagnosed complications following the shock of being dropped by the kingmakers, even when his supposed political godfather, Senator Ben Ayade who represents the Cross River north in the Senate intervened to no avail.

The aspirant, Mr. Sunday Amekye whom friends said complained of malaria attack was rushed to the Obudu General hospital where he died a couple of days ago. As at the time of filling this information gathered that his corpse wasstill in the mortuary, as his father, Mr. Amakye popularly known as Miki-Miki, was packaging a memorable funeral for the ill-fated PDP member.

Sunday is reported to have protested that he was robbed of his ticket few daysafter he had contested and emerged as the party’s councillorship candidate for Obudu Urban 1.

Friend of the deceased, One Mr. William Akpanke described late Sunday as a friend and confidant, adding that the deceased lamented that he had worked for the PDP for about a decade, voting for those contesting election into variousoffices and remaining loyal the PDP, saying he was shocked that the only opportunity he had to have a feel of democratic dividends, was taken away.

Akpanke said before his death, the decease told him that he had borrowed much money from friends, banks, interest groups and political associates in order to prosecute his political ambition and this left him hard and dry. Having been denied the sought after opportunity, which he had all the hope that he would be favoured but frustratedwithout any promise of appointment or job, he had heart attack.

Findings revealed that late Sunday, perceived to be Senator Ayade’s boy lostin an earlier ballot box, but was foisted on the people for the September 2013 council elections in the state which reason many opponents were bitter and plotted to sideline him.The new PPRO, Hogan Bassey could not be reached when contacted on his mobile phone.

How does his death amount to suicide
He sees that office as an opportunity to enrich himself thereby pursuing it with a do or die mentality.
Rest in pieces!
