Hello mates...
Have been following this tread for a while and I guess there are great solar inclined guys here.
Anyways, am a freelance in need of a system that can charge nd up for to 6hours daily. Just my laptop, a bulb, fan, phone... N maybe T.V (Am not a good fan of T.V but I intend using out with my system, it's 24inches.)
I stay in a area effete there's electricity from 2pm till 2pm the next day. Meaning that, on one day, I have at least 20 hours to charge up the system as I won't be needing it.
N from 2pm the next day, there will be no light till the next. I hope someone gets the explanation.
So I need a source of electricity to fill the void

I am not bouyant at the moment but with time I hope to expand the capacity. Thanks

8k sir. The 1000watts is 24vdc. That means it uses minimum of two batteries.

Hello Sir,
Does these chargers over charge the battery?
Is it a smart charger and does float charging?

No sir, they don't overcharge battery. The maximum voltage for the 24vdc is 26.7vdc and 27.2vdc. It cuts off when your battery gets to that voltage and it maintains/retains it at that voltage until the input supply is cut off.

Hi feflo n other gurus in d house.

I hv d following:
. 2pcs of 250w solar panels (mono) for a start
. 40A (12/36/48v) auto mppt charge controller
. 1000w pure sine 12v inverter
. 200ah batt 1pc (planning additional 1pc later, not soon)
. my load is estimated to be about 400w on d average: just TV, decoder, fans and bulbs.

Here are my questions:
1. Should I connect d panels in series or parallel?

2. I intend to add a circuit breaker between d panels and d charge controller, pls how do I determine d amp? And will it be single or double pole?

3. Is it necessary to add another circuit breaker between d charge controller and d battery? If yes, how do I determine d amp?

4. If I add one more 200ah batt to dis array later, will it affect anything already done in question 1 - 3 above?

5. With time, if I intend to add a deep freezer to my load, what must change?

Thnks in adv. as I await your detail response.

Firstly let me congratulate for venturing into renewable energy, you can never go wrong or regret taking such step if its well done.

My take on your proposed set up

1. You need to as a matter of urgency reduce your load, 400watts on the average is pretty too much for a one battery solar system. Get energy efficient appliances, all your load should not be more than 200watts if you really want to enjoy your proposed system.

2. Personally and from experience, i always advise 600watts Solar panels for a 12v 200ah battery though 500watts is still okay.

3. Whenever you are adding circuit breakers, first ask yourself what you are protecting against, for example, if i am adding breaker between panels and charge controller, its probably to protect against short circuit current from the panels. Then i'll add the total wattage of the panels and divide by the system voltage, that gives me the amps.

4. I don't usually add breakers between the CC and Battery but people do it and its good. You can use single or double pole breaker.

5. I will NOT advise you add one more battery to the proposed setup. Its better you upgrade to a higher voltage system like 24vdc or 36vdc or 48vdc.

Thanks.

I estimate that your load should not be above 120watts. Get 12vdc 100ah battery, 400watt solar panel, 1kva inverter and you're good to go.
For more information, contact Femi on 08023662352 or 08165304602.

Wow! I really appreciate your prompt response and d good job u are doing here.

Ok. Advice taken. But pls can u really highlight d implications of such load on a one batt solar sys?

By d way, u didn't answer this in my first post: Should I connect d panels in series or parallel?

feflo:
2. Personally and from experience, i always advise 600watts Solar panels for a 12v 200ah battery though 500watts is still okay.
Noted. But pls why would u have preferred 600w panels?

feflo:
3. Whenever you are adding circuit breakers, first ask yourself what you are protecting against, for example, if i am adding breaker between panels and charge controller, its probably to protect against short circuit current from the panels. Then i'll add the total wattage of the panels and divide by the system voltage, that gives me the amps.
So u are saying in this case, d proposed circuit breaker should be 500w Ă· 12v = 41.7A ? So what value am I to look at? 40A or 45A?

feflo:
4. I don't usually add breakers between the CC and Battery but people do it and its good. You can use single or double pole breaker.
Ok. So pls what factor determines d amp of circuit breaker here? Is it still as in question 3 above?

feflo:
5. I will NOT advise you add one more battery to the proposed setup. Its better you upgrade to a higher voltage system like 24vdc or 36vdc or 48vdc.
Advice taken. However, if I do, pls what's d implication?

By d way, hope d 40A (12/24/48v) mppt charge controller is not too much for a 200ah battery?

Thnks again.

A 500watts Solar panel will give you about 300watts worth of charge (losses and design efficiency), you plan putting a 400watts average load on a 300watts "system". That is an overkill and a design flaw and the implication is that your setup will trip off at a point on low battery even on a good sunny day.
Your total battery storage capacity is about 1200watthours, you can only use about 800watthours in order to save your battery from early death. Do the maths, how long do you think your system will last per day.

The connection to use largely depend on the max input voltage of the Charge Controller, for your system, if you are using a PWM, connect in parallel and if you are using an MPPT, connect in series.
