A city in South Korea is now testing an electrified road which allows public buses to recharge their batteries from buried cables as they travel. It would be tested over the next four months on a 24-kilometre route in the southern city of Gumi.

The power from the technology can either be used to drive the vehicle, or simply to charge the battery. Because of the constant supply of electricity, the battery size does not have to be larger than a fifth of a conventional EV battery. In addition to this, the non-contact system replaces fully the need of the overhead wires that we’re all used to seeing.

Unfortunately, no great invention comes at a cheap cost. With each Online Electric Vehicle (OLEV) being worth around $630,000, the biggest challenge in front of developers, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) is to bring down the technology.

“The technology is readily available but the question is how to bring down the cost,” said Park Jong-Han, manager of the company that produced the OLEV prototypes.

“Once the cost goes down, I believe more cities will be interested in commercializing the new transport network,” Park told AFP. The system has already been partially trialled on a much smaller scale at an amusement park and on the KAIST campus.

bad idea for naija, reasons ..
1. Sudden power outage can cause heavy motionless trafic
2. will take nigeria like 200 years to meet the capable megawatts, since we are strugglng to reach 6000 mgw
3. We are still battling with bad roads, i mean fractured roads can cause electrocution

yes. gas is cheaper because it is in our home. considering the environmental hazard it cause and possible shortage in the future I will say electric vehicle transportation suits them.

Excess megawatts dey worry them. For Naija, we still dey use megabyte to measure electric current.
