Customer service providers have a way of sizing up customers based on their appearance and treating them according to the perceived status. It happens everywhere, all the time, in Naija too. If you go to a Naija bank or a restaurant dressed like a mechanic, you will be treated differently than a person that's more smartly dressed.

It's like any unfair treatment a black person gets from a white person is attributed to racism but the fact is that a white person could have gotten the same treatment Oprah got. I think Oprah was just upset the girl didn't know who she was.

Look at how you are grasping at straw to make unfounded argument. I doubt seriously that you live in a society where racism still exits, otherwise, you would not be making comments. For your information, racism still exists, if not on paper, it does exist in real life. I believe that you have been so brainwashed to the extent that you do not even recognize racism even when it is starring you in the face. Blacks, in the western world, do experience racism daily, and it is very unfortunate for you to claim here that they throw up racism at every given opportunity. In the US, for example, I know of a fact that, even though racism no longer exits on paper, it still exists in the mind of so many and it goes a long way to shape how they relate to others. I don't have to enumerate so many instances of racism that blacks encounter here on a daily basis, but suffice it to state that, being black is in itself, a clog to ones wheel of progress here. It would have been better for you to state that a black person could still succeed despite all the obstacles on his or her way than saying that they cry racism at every given opportunity. My dear, they are not crying wolf, rather, it is the reality. Meanwhile, next time don't use an incident in a make belief world in trying to buttress your argument. The difference between reality and fiction is just like day and night.
Now coming to the the post, the sale girl actually confirmed what Oprah said. She never intended showing her that particular bag because she thought that she could not afford it being a black person. Why should she tell her that she could show her other similar bags? Were there other similar bags? No, not actually. We were made to understand that the bag was uniquely made by Ford for Jennifer Aniston, and there were no similar bags in the store. Hoe come she was volunteering to show her similar bags when there were none? If not for any thing, this shows that the sales girl was lying and it supports what Oprah said, to wit, she thought that Oprah could not afford the bag because she's black.

There are very few African American men who haven't had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars. That happens to me -- at least before I was a senator. There are very few African Americans who haven't had the experience of getting on an elevator and a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she had a chance to get off. That happens often.
