75% Of Lagosians Live In Slums - Amnesty International by FreeGlobe(f): 6:34am On Aug 13, 2013
THE Amnesty International has stated that
despite the Lagos State government’s lofty
dreams of making the state a mega city,
about 75 per cent of Lagosians live in slums.
Speaking at a press conference, on Monday,
on the heels of the demolition of Ijora Badia
East, Mr Oluwatosin Popoola, Amnesty
International’s Nigeria researcher, stated
that the state government’s failure to
respect the rights of the residents of Badia
had resulted in hardship for the people who
still remained largely homeless and jobless
despite pleas from them for compensation
from the state government.
He stated that forced evictions of Nigerians
in Lagos had cost around 9,000 people their
homes or livelihoods. He added that tens of
thousands more could be at risk if the
government proceeded with plans to
redevelop the slum area of Badia East.
According to a report jointly issued with the
Social and Economic Rights Action Centre
(SERAC) and the Amnesty International, the
Lagos State government must act
consistently with Nigeria’s obligations under
the international law.
“The effects of February’s forced eviction
have been devastating for the Badia East
community, where dozens are still sleeping
out in the open or under a nearby bridge
exposed to rain, mosquitos and at risk of
physical attack,” the report stated.
The report called on Lagos authorities to
halt the forced evictions aimed at bringing
order to the chaotic and crowded
metropolis which is home to about 15
million people.
“The Lagos State government has violated
the right to adequate housing of the
residents of Badia East by failing to put in
place any of the legal safeguards required
under the international law, prior to
evicting thousands of the residents.
“The demolition has devastating
consequences on the lives of the evictees.
This is one eviction too many, all in the
name of development. The Nigerian
government has failed the people of Badia
by resettling them in the area from Oluwole,
where they were in 1973. Oluwole area is
now home to the National Theatre and the
Federal Government resettled them in Badia
without proper documentation,” the report
said.
SERAC’s Coordinator, Mr Felix Morka,
pointed out that the residents of Badia must
be provided with effective remedies and
reparation for the violations suffered.
“In the case of Badia, we have seen old
women, pregnant women and litle children
forcefully left to the mercy of the elements
all in the name of development. Most of the
human rights standards were ignored,” he
added.
He called on the National Assembly to adopt
a resolution concerning all forced evictions
in Nigeria and also pass into law, without
delay, a bill explicitly prohibiting forced
evictions.

This is one eviction too many all in the name of development.

Now I ask, what are they developing when the development does not affect the life of an average Lagosian..?

Someone like Eko Ile, maybe living in one of the slums but he is only interested in taking pictures of buildings built by foreigners, and residencial homes he can only dream of...
He care less about those walking clandestinely on the 100billion naira bridge searching for dinner..

The Lagos State Government has continued to act with impunity without regards for the lives, safety and well being of the poor..What is the essence of Government if it cannot guaranty the right of the weak, hopeless and voiceless..I know the Bible and Quran lays emphases on how the poor amongst us should be treated, yet Churches and Mosques are thronged with our rulers from the Federal Government,to the Sates and Local Government but they cannot put this simple but important commandment of God to help the poor into practice..Hypocrites.

Shut up there!!!
If not for the 'loud noise' would you have known the pitiable living condition of the average Lagosian?

You don't judge a city by the high cost of living, the number of bridges and emulsion painted roundabouts..

Move round the city with a questionnnaire (not a camera), and ask questions about the living conditions of your people..

Are these posters above me really concerned about the poor living in Lgos slums??....Or they just want to poke fun and feel all righteous??

Well, it doesn't stop the fact that when told to post positive developments and locations in their home states, they'll struggle to fill a page while Lagos will probably run for over 10.

You all better know that a large number of your people constitute the occupants of those slums and them returning home will do the LASG a big favour so that they can demolish what they left behind and replace it with housing estates.

SMH at how they leave their villages to come expand the slums in Lagos, this is exactly what Fashola is trying to stop and they're busy screaming "He's anti-people" only to come back and laff at the slums they help create.

Fashiola is the best governor, where are they? Imagine a govt that has no plan for the poor and hopeless. A govt that evicts 10,000 poor people and made them homeless. A govt that skyrocket the school fees of LASU to 100% and said education is not for the poor. A govt that doesn't want to see hawkers on the street but forget that dia is hawkers in uk, usa etc.

Where did i mention Igbo?? Regardless of your tribe, Igbo, Hausa, Nupe, Ibibio, Yoruba....Your people are resident in those slums.

Other States envy Lagos due to it being the economic capital of Nigeria but fail to observe its downside in a Country like Nigeria.

Once a city eg Uyo hits an economic boom and people start migrating there, voila!!!....Slums must follow suit and in Nigeria where 75percent are poor, it's going to be a reflection of the porpotion of slums.

Are you really concerned about the poor?? This is just some Political score you're on about.

Why don't you employ some and reduce their number, rather that pointing fingers at Fashola trying to discourage the senseless Migratory pattern of Nigerians that troop to the State he's governing putting pressure on the sparce resources and infrastructure he's trying to develop??

Due to neglect by the past millitary Administrators, I'v watched Lagos decay. Existing slums grew larger, new ones sprang up and expanded due to that daft migratory pattern of Nigerians......( Result of the Money is in Lagos mentality).

For the first time, someone is doing something to put this in check and some people are argueing that he should keep providing for their ever increasing number?? Can't your state Governors do that?? Must it be Fashola??

Look, those days of coming to Lagos to come live under bridges, wandering the streets jobless is over. This is the simple message Fashola is trying to pass across.

I thought this thread was developed so we can share our point of views but it seems its just another political smear campaign against Fashola.

I'll love to hear what your Governors are doing about "The poor".

By the time you look up from your Laptops and smart-phones, Fashola would have commissioned another project.

Sit there and criticize him while your regions continue to wallow in obscurity. So busy bending over to see Fashola's ars*hole they forget theirs is wide open.

Absolute rubbish. cities transform by lifting inhabitants out of poverty, creating opportunities that will lift the poor out of poverty not forced transformation into megacity. Fashola thinks by alienating the poor from Lagos, Lagos will turn to new York, London etc. lol. leader indeed! and 80% of these poor are yorubas btw.
