RESIDENTS of Ibadan living on Total Garden-Yemetu-Idi-Arere-Oja’ba axis were astonished on Wednesday, as one Hiace commercial bus, with Oyo registration number XF 843 NRK, picked lunatics from the streets of the city.
The bus, according to Nigerian Tribune investigation, belonged to an agency commissioned by the state government to rid the city of mentally challenged people on the road.

Branded in the colours of the state commercial paint, the bus was first noticed on Bodija road, en route Beere. It stopped around Yemetu, opposite Mobil petrol station to pick a mentally challenged woman and at Oja’ba, around Isude Mosque.

When the Nigerian Tribune contacted some of the officials of the agency on board with the mentally challenged, one Afinju Leke, who did not mention the name of the agency, said they were from the Ministry of Environment and Habitat, commissioned to rid the road of mentally challenged.
He said the agency had been picking the affected people on the road and taking them to a designated camp at Soka-Boluwaji, on Lagos/Ibadan Expressway.

When contacted, the information officer of the Ministry of Environment and Habitat, Cosmas Oni, confirmed that the agency was truly commissioned by the state government and was initially attached to the ministry.
“It is true that the agency was commissioned by the state government to do the job. However, it has been moved to the Ministry of Women Affairs, so it’s no longer under Environment ministry again,” he said.

Oyo oni daru..

You people have started again..

Do not let your governors captivate your minds via slogans, logos, anthems and poems..

Already we have a National anthem and a pledge. We do not need irrelevant segregations.

So this is the new agenda for the governors? Nice I must say. But lets not go arresting sane people going about their legal activities and tag them lunatics or destitutes.

Its funny how the men move around and just catch and throw in the said lunatics into a bus for reunion and rehab. Do they know how to catch real, very real raving lunatics? It isnt a day job. Not one I should envy.

Goodluck to them. Our roads and major cities should be bereft of mentally challenged people

It is a step in the right direction. I hope the crazy men wont be deported just like what Lagos state government did rather they should be rehabilitated, empowered and allowed to decide where they want to live their lives. There are mad,yes but they are Nigerians too. They should be allowed freedom to live wherever they deem fit to stay.

As long as we're talking about real lunatics, no problem. They should be taken off the streets and rehabilitated in a mental institution, not death camps. Most, if not all, the lunatics are their fellow Odua descendants anyway (while beggars and destitutes are a 60/40 arrangement between core north and South West). You would not find an Igbo lunatic or beggar in the dusty streets of Ibadan or anywhere else in the South West for that matter.

As long as they're not illegally arresting petty traders and hustlers trying to eke an honest living and declare them "destitutes" as a ploy to deport them illegally, no problem.
