Flood resulting from heavy rains which started on Thursday evening through Friday in Bauchi has destroyed property worth millions of naira, in some parts of the State, especially in the State capital, as Governor Isa Yuguda warns residents living along water ways to relocate to avoid further loss of lives and property. The flood had cut off the road connecting many communities in the State capital as well as the highway, causing damages, affecting majorly the popular Wuntin Dada, Yelwa-Wunti market roads and the railway axis. A Resident of Wunti Dada, Alhaji Ayuba, who spoke to Dailypost, said, “Heavy floods have been common in the past few years in the State, but I have never witnessed such downpour since my stay in this area. “We had a sleepless night yesterday, you can see that all my property are destroyed; the mattresses, televisions, look at the kitchen, see how we are syphoimg the water, just to make way for it. I had park my children to my neighbour’s house, whose case is not as severe as my own”. Another resident, Mallam Aminu, in the same area said, “We do not have to call people to come and see; you have seen it yourself. This is a natural disaster cutting across this town, we are not an exception. Our house is almost submerged; we are trying to evacuate whatever we can evacuate to a temporary site” He added that, “The property we can lay our hands on, we pick out, the ones we are not able to salvage, we leave them, because life is more important than property and I cannot risk the lives of my children” He decried that, “One cannot quantify the damage in terms of Naira and kobo but we have suffered a colossal loss both in material and other items. Following the heavy downpour, Governor Isa Yuguda on Thursday night went round the city to see for himself the extent of damage caused by the rain and the level of flood in the metropolis. The Governor warned residents of the State living along water ways to relocate to avoid further loss of lives and property. He lamented over the way flood over the years in the country had rendered many people homeless and without source of livelihood. He disclosed this while addressing journalists in the Government House, Bauchi, shortly after inspecting areas affected by the flood in the State capital. Yuguda recalled that during the first two years of his administration, the State experienced a serious outbreak of cholera and typhoid fever, but the State Government was able to address tackle the disease before it went out of hands. According to him, “The devastating effects of flood in the State last year can’t be imagined. This is the reason why we are warning people to avoid constructing fences along the water ways because the water usually gets trapped without any passage and can lead to collapse of buildings. He asserted that, “People should also ensure that they clear-up their gutters and drainages so that water can have easy passage. We should use the resources at our disposal to secure our lives and property, instead of waiting for disaster to strike before we take action”.
