But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. - Galatians 4:4-5 We are back to our series on the purposes of Jesus Christ; by exploring the reasons He came to earth with a view to help us identify our own niche in Him and in the agenda of God for mankind. According to the passage above, God sent Jesus to earth, among other reasons, to redeem the people who were under the law so that they might receive the adoption as sons. There is a twin mission captured in this passage. In one breath, the scripture tells us that Jesus came to offer redemption to all those under the oppressive weights of the regulations of the laws of Moses. We may be conversant with some of the rules that God gave to the children of Israel during their exodus and after they settled down in the Promised Land. Most of these regulations are contained in the books of Exodus to Deuteronomy, and they are so many that it is quite easy for one to forget them, particularly considering that there was no wide-spread literacy at that time, and very few people had access to the tablets and parchment scrolls on which the laws were scripted. So, while it was quite difficult to access these laws, ignorance of them was no excuse either and whoever commits a sin unknowingly or unintentionally would still be required to make atonement for it or face the consequences of his/her sins (Leviticus 5:14-19). Imagine how harrowing it must have been then for you not to know all the law says, but still be held accountable for the breach of it. This seemingly harsh regime was occasioned because of the many hurts humans had inflicted on the heart of God through disobedience. Starting from the garden of Eden, to excesses during the time of Noah, to the orgies that reigned in the time of Abraham which culminated in the decimation of such cities as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the hard-heartedness of even the chosen people of Israel all through their journey from Egypt to Canaan, as well as many other untoward human inclinations and indulgences. However, according to our reference scripture, “in the fullness of time”, God decided to send Jesus Christ to come and redeem humans from the yoke of the law, because if He was to continue measuring our righteousness by our compliance, no one would be anywhere near the pass mark. So He sent Jesus Christ to come through the natural process of manhood, growing up and living under the same requirements of the law without running foul of any of them. By so doing making Him a perfect example of human triumphing over the dictates of the law; whilst giving Him the locus standi to represent all humans before God to nullify the dictates of the old testament, which anyone who must fulfil them must live by them, to introduce a new testament, which is based on unmerited favour and faith on the part of each individual in the fact that Jesus had really paid the price for him/her.
