One of the many questions we get about
microbiology programme in Nigeria is always
which one to choose between Masters in
Pharmaceutical Microbiology vs. Industrial
Microbiology in Nigeria.
Just like in some of our previous articles,
choosing the best programme to study or
where to specialize in your chosen profession
can be challenging and a single mistake can
ruin your future career. Getting it right
involves a lot but there are many options you
have to put into consideration before making
your final decision.
I will basically focus most of the information
around Nigerian universities and working
environment. I know it is a well-known fact
that most graduates of microbiology do not end
up practicing or working within the field or
related fields.
Remember, by using versus on the topic of this
post does not make any of the programs less
good. Every program in university has a
purpose and the knowledge is required
somewhere else. Though some programs might
have better employment opportunities than
others but still every university program has
its own importance.
Now let go back to MSc. Specialization in
Microbiology. As a first degree holder in
microbiology, the question of where to
specialize in further studies is vast – Medical
Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology,
Environmental Microbiology, Plant
Pathology, Mycology, Pharmaceutical
Microbiology and Medical Parasitology.
We will consider Industrial Microbiology and
Pharmaceutical Microbiology here .
So what is Pharmaceutical Microbiology?
Pharmaceutical microbiology is the part of
industrial microbiology that is responsible for
ensuring medications does not contain
harmful levels of microbes- such as bacteria,
yeasts and molds. Another major focus of
pharmaceutical microbiology is to determine
how a product will react in cases of
contamination1.
Pharmaceutical Microbiologist in Nigeria can
work in clinical laboratories, food industry,
pharmaceutical industry, and the health care
organization such as NAFDAC and Standard
Organization of Nigeria.
So what is Industrial Microbiology?
Industrial microbiology or microbial
biotechnology encompasses the use of
microorganisms in the manufacture of food or
industrial products. The use of microorganisms
for the production of food, either human or
animal, is often considered a branch of food
microbiology. The microorganisms used in
industrial processes may be natural isolates;
laboratory selected mutants or genetically
engineered organisms2.
Areas of industrial microbiology include
quality assurance for the food, pharmaceutical,
and chemical industries. Industrial
microbiologists may also be responsible for air
and plant contamination, health of animals
used in testing products, and discovery of new
organisms and pathways3.
Since pharmaceutical Microbiology is regarded
as part of industrial Microbiology, it means that
industrial Microbiology has a bigger scoop of
application and will definitely has more
employment opportunities in Nigeria.
If you are keen to work in pharmaceutical
companies, pharmaceutical microbiology will
be the best option but for a broader industrials,
industrial microbiology might be the best for
you.
