The US President, some minutes ago, declared that he would seek Congressional authorization before launching military strikes on Syria. He however, stated that he wouldn't seek a UN mandate before the US embarks on such an action.

• Unlike the scenarios in Iraq and Afghanistan, President Obama declared that the US would not "put boots on the ground", meaning that the US military action (subject to approval from the US Congress) willlikely be limited to airstrikes and missile strikes, presumably from US warships stationed in the Gulf.

Officially, most US military actions are geared towards a 'noble' goal of ousting a dictator, or providing "humanitarian" assistance. However, one can't discount the influence of the Military-Industrial Complex.
