Gregdcutie: There is indeed so much hate in the hearts of Nigerians against oneanother that am beginning to think the problem has never been our leaders all these while buh the hatred against others that most people have been made to grow up with

Hate is when a Yoruba state wants to teach Yoruba language in it's schools?

Gregdcutie: thank God another person shares my sentiments. And instead of people tabling their facts to defend their side of the divide they resort to insults .

You don't start a post with intemperate language, while claiming to be an independent arbitrator, without expecting a commensurate response.

Gregdcutie: I just got angered now seeing a news on channels tv that whilst the south western governors left pressing issues unresolved to discuss making yoruba the language to be used in teaching in the basic levels of education(like its not already a nuisance as most students in primary and secondary levels of education cant effecively communicate except with yoruba) the lagos state house of assembly has passed a law that henceforth members will on somedays dress in YORUBA TRADITIONAL ATTIRE and conduct house proceedings in YORUBA. And I wondered if they taught of the implications

When you asserted that the English language is the basis for our unity, you clearly had no idea about how fickle-minded you sounded. Your motivation for starting this thread notwithstanding, only someone with a fully colonised mind makes highfalutin statements like this.

I see you conveniently refrained from commenting any further on the laudable efforts of the Anambra state government to give equal pride of place to the Igbo language. You ought to be ashamed of your Tomism in this respect @OP. angry

Gregdcutie: where did he state there that the Anambra state house would be speaking igbo or igbo will now be the official lingua franca in basic levels of education. If Nigeria must remain a federal republic we must be careful to remember that we are Nigerians first

But we are not Nigerians first!

Orlando Owoh: Igbo people cause problem where there is none, and if they are confronted, they claim they are being persecuted like the Jews.
There constitution is there for anybody to see, and it clearly states in sections 55 and 97 for the national and states houses of assembly respectively on the language(s) that can be used to conduct business on the floor of the houses.
Section 55: The business of the National Assembly shall be conducted in Englsh and in Hausa, Ibo (sic) and Yoruba when adequate arrangements have been made therefor.

Section 97: The business of a House of Assembly shall be conducted in English, but the House may in addition to English conduct the business of the Hause in one or more other languages spoken in the state in as the Hause may by resolution approve.

Language is the first cultural heritage you can give to the next generation.
Anybody non-yoruba who want to be a part of the regional development would renounce his village and accept a good yoru-tribal mark on his face.

To whom much is given much is expected.

It's never going to be too late, for those who plan ahead. If you can't see the handwriting on the wall that Nigeria is heading towards a place of no-return, then I can't help you, mate. Heaven helps those who help themselves - hence why Yoruba's have started helping "themselves" by laying the foundation for all eventualities.

Anyway, that aside, how many Nigerians can communicate effectively in English language? I dare say less than 1%. And the funniest thing is that, most can't even communicate in their mother-tongue as well. So evidently, no matter how you look at it, cultural imperialism has been a lose-lose situation for African people. However, this initiative would help revive the dying African language/culture - and we as African people need to support it. Truth be told, you can never speak the English language like an Anglo-saxon - but the only ace you have is your language and and it's high time you started perfecting it before you end up like the slaves taken to the new world!
