Proposed West Africa Trade Centre To Be Sited At Onitsha by Nobody: 1:44am On Sep 03, 2013
ANAMBRA State Government has approved 50 hectares of land for building of the West African Trade Centre in Onitsha, Anambra State, which is said to be the largest industrial and commercial centre in West Africa.

This was revealed during a press conference at the Government House, Awka, on Thursday, by Obiora Anyaralu, the President of West African Trade Centre.

He said that the centre would consists of over 20,000 modern business stores, office apartments, executive office, space for bulk traders, emergency clinic, traders' lodge, car park, Day-care and nursery school as well as generating plant to power the complex.

Anyaralu said that the concept of the trade centre was borne out of the fact that South Eastern states have no standard commercial centre that could provide and sustain future expansion.

He also said that the project would create job opportunities for the people of the South-East and youths who have no money for undergoing training in universities.

The West African Trade Centre President, said that when the trade centre becomes operational, more than 2,000 women will be provided with soft loans at 10 per cent interest rate to enable them to pay or purchase shops in the complex.

Speaking on the choice of Onitsha for the West African Trade Centre of the South Eastern State, since it is not in the centre of the South Eastern states, Anyaralu said that the location was chosen because it is the gateway of the South-East.

He thanked Governor Peter Obi for providing the land for the West African Trade Centre, adding that the state will benefit immensely from it economically.

Having the West African or even the African world trade centre in onitsha is a very good and noble project not only will it draw the world to onitsha for business, it would trigger other sectors of the economy like the aviation industry, tourism, hotels ,banking and foreign exchange. The international airport in enugu and the concessioned river Niger port would receive big economic boosts.
My advice to the developers is to build a world class trade centre comparable to any trade centre in dubai, China and America, the cost of the investment would be9 recouped through the high volume of business that ce

If it is going to be like the WTC in new York City , dubai or China then they might not need so much land space

Well, it a good thing to build, but I wonder if they really mean a downtown business area?

Sometimes terms get coined differently in Nigeria.

For example, an "ultra modern" market actually just means a newly constructed market or building, to the same old architectural designs as the 80's. Or a "business centre" which actually is just a glorified kiosk, with access to a phone and computers.....lol

I hope this will be something very modern and actually spell a new dawn in business, where the state is concerned.

The investors are building a WATC and not a WTC which makes it a customised African version of WTC may be not like the WTC in new York City but promoting international trade and a member of WTC ASSOCIATION

It may likely be a little bit Onitsha outskirts. Maybe areas as Trans Nkisi extention or 33 extension. Onitsha is expanding seriously due to the urban renewal presently going on. I hope Orient will start the International Cargo Airport real soon around Otuocha sites.

All in all this is a win-win for Anambra, SE and Nigeria at large.

Okonkwo said the state government had acquired 50 hectares of land for the project at the 2-in-1 Louis Odumegwu-Ojukwu complex in Oyi.

According to him, the centre will be constructed in phases with shopping malls, modern facilities, eateries, offices, nursery and hotels.

``You know that Onitsha is the largest market in West Africa. We have decided to expand the market by approving the construction of the trade centre,’’ he said.

The commissioner said the establishment of the centre in the South East was to encourage and consolidate on the business acumen of the Igbo.

He said it would also help to sustain strong economic development which will trigger chains of economic activities.

Okonkwo said that some of the social vices in the South East would be reduced as the centre would create employment and improve the well-being of the people.

Also, the President of the West Africa Trade Centre, Mr Emmanuel Anyararu, said the centre would provide a platform for the strong economic development of the zone. (NAN)

The whole story is sketchy at best, and i feel it's just being released now to make Obi/APGA appear dynamic (at this 11th hour.....when they've spent close to 8 years twiddling their thumbs doing next to nothing!)......and make it look like they're finally making moves to bring out Onitshas full potential.

It's no different from the raft of donations, gifts and policy initiatives he's been making recently: SUV gifts to traditional rulers; monthly stipends to the elderly; the ad-hoc presentation of cheques to schools; conducting LGA elections for the first time since he became Governor! It's all a smokescreen to make people think they've had a working gov't and vote APGA in the coming elections!

I doubt that -if anything is finally built- it would be a world-class structure and a thing of pride to look at; going by his antecedents, it's most likely going to be a collection of budget market stalls and kiosks......that's if anything actually gets built!

I'm prepared to eat humble pie if i'm proved wrong, but i ain't holding my breath!
