The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has observed a recent campaign by partisan interests in the media to tar the reputation of its leadership, particularly the Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, OFR.

This campaign has so far been waged in the form of serial press reports of alleged financial misdeeds, either directly committed or approved by the Chairman of the Commission. Expectedly, the reports were no more than wild allegations, with no iota of proof or evidence to substantiate them. Few of these reports indeed crossed the line of journalistic decorum, and are accordingly being processed for libel litigation.

But the Commission also has information that the campaign will not be left at the level of press reports alone. There are reportedly designs to upscale the plot into public displays of hostility towards INEC, such as through rented street rallies against its present leadership, among other measures.

The whole point of this devious campaign, obviously, is to deflate the integrity of the Commission and cast doubt on its credibility and ability to conduct the 2015 General Election in accordance with international best standards.

The Commission hereby reassures the public of its commitment to uphold its integrity, fairness and impartiality as an umpire of the electoral process. It will stay focused on its programmes to deliver elections that will be world class in fairness and credibility, come 2015, despite the daunting challenges. But the Commission must here again restate, as it has always done, that it cannot do it alone. It therefore pleads with other stakeholders, especially politicians, to equally commit to this cause.

We'll roast them, beginning from here in Nairaland, and on the streets if push comes to shove. If they want to scatter this country, its also acceptable.

Let's make a wild guess on who's behind the allegations of impropriety which informs this press release from INEC? shocked

APC/PDM Registration: Desperate Moves To Discredit Jega Begin

The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Attahiru Jega is under security watch over allegations that he leased his personal apartments located in choice areas of Abuja to the commission and that some of his principal aides could pose a threat to national security.

Findings by LEADERSHIP indicate that the electoral umpire is being closely monitored by security officials, especially what sources said has to do with the funding of the activities of the commission outside of its budget and the flouting of extant civil service rules concerning staff accommodation.

The Presidency, it was learnt, was irked by the registration of two main opposition political parties, the All Progressive Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) by INEC under Jega’s watch. Everything government has against him is now being made public and could likely affect his fate as the commission’s chairman.

The security agencies, we gathered, are investigating the alleged monthly payment of the sum of N1 million every month to five aides of the INEC chairman by the United Nations Development Project (UNDP), .

The aides are his chief of staff, special assistant, personal assistant, chief technical adviser and chief press secretary. This development, it was learnt, is considered a security risk to the nation.

The INEC chairman is also being investigated for allegedly leasing his personal apartments in highbrow Maitama District of Abuja to the commission as its guest house, where the chairman’s five personal aides live.

The security agencies are also believed to be investigating the alleged renting of another of his personal properties to the commission as INEC office at Wuse 2, Abuja.

Jega is also being investigated for retaining and hiring a Kenyan ICT consultant, a development that security agencies see as having the potential to undermine national security.

“The action jeopardises national security both in electoral matters and related ones as voters and candidates as well as political parties’ details would be in the domain of a foreign company which can employ them for any use,” a source told LEADERSHIP.

If jona is not careful, he will lose woefully come 2015. No news abt ASUU strike. There is almost notin positive abt dis contri! It shows dat dis govt does not care abt Nigerians but themselves.

Even though I like GEJ small, I tink he's becoming power drunk so he shud go. He has served as deputy gov, gov, vice presido nd now president for 6yrs by 2015. Habatically..wetin u still dey fnd again? To be honest, do u expect d northerners 2 fold their arms nd watch a man who said he will only do one term control nd abuse his powers d way he has done?

Jst do ur best nd history will always remember yu 4 gud. All dis talk abt atiku, pdp nd watever is becoming increasingly irritating. Abi, make we jst divide jeje
