FRSC Writes Toyota Over High Rate Of Crashes by Godson201333(m): 8:59am On Sep 05, 2013 |
Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Osita Chidoka, said on Wednesday that he had written to the Managing Director of Toyota Nigeria Limited over high frequency of crashes involving Toyota buses, especially the Hiace brand. Chidoka said extensive investigations and analysis of commuter vehicles carried out by the FRSC between 2007-2012, showed that Toyota Hiace buses were involved in 1,844 accidents. He said 31 percent of bus accidents within the period also resulted in fire incidents. The FRSC boss, who spoke at a sensitisation programme on speed limiting devices in Abuja, stressed that the situation was unacceptable to his organisation. He said the study indicated that road traffic crashes involving buses had been on the increase since 2007 and that available data showed an average yearly increase of 126 crashes involving Toyota Hiace buses, representing 48 per cent of the total number of buses involved in accidents. He noted that Nigeria started recording high Toyota Hiace crashes in August 2010. “It is on record that Toyota Hiace YH3 buses were recalled in Australia as a result of fire in 1990 and recently in 2012. The 1990 safety recall closed August 26, 2010, the period Nigeria started recording high Toyota Hiace crashes involving fire incidents. The corps has therefore written to the Managing Director of Toyota to bring this menace to their attention,” he said. The Corps Marshall advised commercial bus owners to install speed limiting devices in their vehicles and obey stipulated speed limits while plying the roads. Chidoka said the FRSC had also written to the management of Young Shall Grow Motors over the frequent involvement of their buses in crashes, saying the company’s buses were involved in 32 crashes which resulted in 71 deaths and 93 injuries between January 2012 and June 2013. He said that the FRSC was carrying out a full audit of safety processes of the transport company, spanning its drivers, vehicles, and company policies to ascertain their compliance with minimum safety standards. The FRSC, Chidoka said, was collecting data on another transport firm, Peace Mass Transit, and would also conduct safety audit on the company. He noted that the PMT and the ABC transport company had voluntarily commenced the installation of speed limiters, which he described as an effective means of preventing speed violation and resultant consequences, in their buses. Secretary to Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim said there was a need to work together to stop speed violation by motorists, adding that the Federal Government believed that speed limiting devices in commercial vehicles and trucks would reduce road crashes in the country. source http://www.punchng.com/news/frsc-writes-toyota-over-high-rate-of-crashes/ 3 Likes |

If 80% of the total brands in Nigeria are Toyota, is it not common sense that Toyota should have the highest number of brands that are involved in crashes? Federal Road Safety Corps- when would FRSC pay attention to the state and safety of the federal roads first and foremost before paying attention to the "objects" that plies the roads? 41 Likes |

This man is so clueless, Toyota has the highest number of vehicles in Nigeria. The Toyota Hiace bus makes about 80% of buses plying our roads, that simply counts for the number of accidents involving them. He should be concerned about the state of our death trap roads. Pot holes everywhere, no road signs on our roads and you want to prevent accidents. 16 Likes |

If the issue is the road it should affect every brand equally? Why is Toyota overrepresented. You hardly see Toyota use in Intra State Transport what you see is Mazda,Volkswagen,Mitsubishi,Nissan We also ignore the claim that that TOYOTA was recalled in some COUNTRIES for SAFETY ISSUES> Does this mean Nigerians buy those vehicles cheap and send home The LAGOSIAN IMPORTERS 3 Likes |

Firstly, Toyota has lots of customers in Nigeria cos Toyota vehicles are durable, dem no dey chop fuel like Honda, Peaugeot or BMW. That's why their vehicles are among the most used for transport companies. Expecially that Toyota Hiace. 2ndly, there should be a reason why most of the accidents involving Toyota Buses v fire. Last Bullet: The FRSC Corps Marshal go dey form big boy now cos he don spot something about Toyota Accidents In Nigeria. |

Most of the hiace used for transportation in nija are converted from right to left and also joined after being cut in pieces. Safety is then compromised especially on electrical wiring and mechanical stress. Visit ladipo. 2 Likes |

Una don start debate while The "Chidoka" is sitting at home right now, expecting toyota management to come and dash him a toyota car to shut him up. Did he compare his statistics with that from other countries? Our problem is not the toyota buses but the general mentality of Nigerians about toyota being the best and the over confidence of the drivers of these buses. They think its made in heaven, therefore, it is un-accidentable 3 Likes |

Bantino: Can they change their specs because of Naija? Or are we suppose to be more careful with the way we drive? Or should our govt fix and build new roads?? Or should our people stop importing and converting right hand toyota buses??The conversion of these vehicles from right hand to left must be a major reason why this crashes occurs more frequently. It's only in Naija u can see such practices going on. |

He should go back to school.... Can he manufacture ordinary brake pad Mtschew. It is true that THE YOUNG SHALL DIE/GROW drivers over speed and drive recklessly. It is true that a high percentage of Toyota hiace crashes result in fire. It is also true that Nigerian roads are very bad especially in the south east.. It is also true that FRSC officials love taking bribes from drivers as peaceful settlement to prevent booking. It is true that FRSC officials book for anything and everything... The fear of FRSC is the beginning of wisdom. Dem no dey carry gun but dem dey stand close to army checkpoint... It is true that FRSC officials are atheists. Or how else can one explain booking a man driving his family to church on a sunday morning ... With my long list, you will believe with me that END TIMES are imminent... 3 Likes |

As two other brilliant posters have noted above, it's only a common sense that Toyota will, consequently, have the highest number of vehicles involved in traffic haphazard. What the 'road safety' official is saying is analogous to saying men get involved in accidents than women. Pathetic. |
