Timcy01: Pls is NANS a political party cos I wonder what's wrong with them. They are all operating without focus. I tot they will be saying they are going to block the entrance to presidential villa, ministry of education, NUC or ASUU secretariat but as usual they are confused. Anyway they should pls rememba to also shut down foreign universities. Hahaha

But seriously I think students need to face NANS cos I tink they are part of the problem.

They are making the right moves but to the wrong set. They should face those directly involved n leave Private Universities alone. besides, i doubt if they can achieve their aim.

This is stupidity at highest level. Private university students pay through their noses in order to get education. When they graduate, people look down on their certificates. And the only thing they gain, which is absence of strikes, the privileged public university NANS wants to take that one away from them.

University students are not the only youths in this country, just as ASUU are not the only workers in this country. If every youth in Nigeria begins to demand for government-subsidized university education as their rights and every worker in this country begins to do like ASUU, this country will become hell.

It would be better if this grievances are targeted at NASS, Aso Rock, and Govt Houses nationwide. We shld be able to begin to address our leaders the way they shld be addressed violently or peacefully.

priscaoge: And what τ̲̅ђe F*ck is ASUU's biz wif private UNI? #Smh. Let them shut the whole UNI in Nigeria so that we will know that there is nothing like UNI in our country. *Confused Pple*.
There is a brooding crisis in Nigeria's education sector and everyone should be concerned, hence we would all be victims of what i term the BOOMERANG EFFECT.

eldoradoxx: A man recently said that if the present generation of young men and women(let me put it specifically in the age bracket of 30years and below) were borne during the colonial era, perhaps Nigeria wouldn't achieve independence till today. The present generation of men are lazy, directionless, visionless and lack focus. Where on earth today can the entire university be shut down for close to 3 months, forcing more than 1.5 million students who are either doing pre degree, degree and post graduate course to sit at home? I dare to say this can only happen in Nigeria where we have an entire generation of weakling and slowpokes who are praying, crying and patiently waiting for Government to help them and give them their right. I pity this generation, Government will continue to joke with us. It is only when the government knows that they can't contain the crisis that would fall out of students taking to the street to protest and shut down the entire federation, nothing will happen. Docile young generation is all government needs to destroy a nation with ineptitude, corruption and profligacy. I believe strongly that most of our current leaders who schooled in Nigeria where in school days during those dark days of Ali Must Go Riot, when they violently brought the country to a standstill even in military regime just for about 5 naira increase in feeding allowance. If they could resist military regimes of those days, I don't see why docile young men should be making noise here rather than go out there and organise the mother of all riots to cripple government and force them to open excess crude account or even foregin reserve to fund schools.

Just silly of them to in the first place think of that. I guess and I think I'm right that the lecturers in these private universities do not have better conditions of service than members of ASUU at the least of which is the non existence in most cases of a pension for those on the private universities. NASS has really become a political tool if NANS leadership will be on a salary, official car, and all those paraphernalia that is associated with corruption and waste of public fund. As much as it is of utmost expediency that university education should be paid due attention, NASS is not asking is of what importance is the strike action in the middle of the semester to the students. Why not embark on strike when all schools will be on sessional breaks. somebody says all schools does not have the same calendar I ask couldn't the strike commence at the end of the sessions of each school and it goes on like that in a wave ?

NANS is not doing what they ought to be doing and they are just channeling their energies to frivolities. Do they realize that in learning especially in (Higher) education it is better to start all over again than to stop abruptly midway and then to jump start where you stopped, mind them that is what their lecturers will surely do. I am talking from experience cause I experienced it in full measure in the early 90's ( between January '92 and December '97 in my university, there were a total of 22 months of strikes and closures) besides that with the little increase in salaries and grants then there was no improvement in the style and lecture notes of the lecturers, save for few good and brilliant ones who regularly travel abroad to deliver lectures.
It used to take a whole lot of efforts to come back to speed with your studies when strike actions are protracted and starts in the middle of academic activities. In fact performance afterwards are really abysmal low and the lecturers and faculty councils will sympathetically reduce the pass mark standards through upgrading and all sorts of things in order to have a sizeable number of students to graduate or pass.

It is obvious the way the leadership of NASS has been going on that going to school is a pass time and an escape from the problems in the larger society which they'll eventually come face to face with no matter how they try to run away from it. I can't imagine the closure of all hospitals private and public because nurses in the public (government) hospitals are in industrial actions based on the conditions of service in the public hospitals. More , the negotiation has nothing to do with state universities o, as it is beyond the fed govt and I believe the state universities are well involved in the strike too, so what is their own position after all this this ?

Lastly I ask, assuming government decides to agree to ASUU's demands and grant them all they ask for I mean ALL, what BENEFIT WILL IT BE FOR THOSE FINAL YEAR AND PENULTIMATE FIUNAL TYEAR STUDENTS IN ALL THE DEPARTMENTS ACROOS THE UNIVERISTIES. ?

Saint Chukz: It really bothers me when i'm reading the kind of responses i'm seeing in this thread on NL. It is obvious most of us are as insentitive to the plight of the majority of Nigerian students(at least 50%) who are at home just the same way the FG are, are we going to deny that the children of the rich and powerful people in these private universities are not the same people who have ensured our education in this country is so backward? Let's embrace the reality and dissect issues pragmatically especially issues such as this. I believe the NANS felt taking such an action would call to the attention of those who feel seeking to addressing burning issues in this country is not their burden to carry and by keeping of it, they are myopic to think that they are insulated from such ills that has befallen our society. For me, i see this action as an offshoot of the BOOMERANG EFFECT.
how can u accuse the parents of students in private universities as d pple dat have taken education backward in Nigeria? *smh* this is pure jealousy and envy. is it only big men in govt that put their children in private schools? undecided

I see you still lack a basic understanding of the whole problem, do you know that if our public education were to be standard, there won't be a need to pay through your noses in those so called glorified secondary schools brandished as private universities? In Ghana Universities for example, that the rich and powerful often send their wards to study, do you know that the tuition for ghanian nationals is so low that it could even be termed free education. How does their government make up for that, its simple, they simply charge foreign students like Nigerians who study in their universities more and exorbitant fees to cater for their own. Again how come those Nigerians over there don't get to complain? Simple, it is because they feel the value/standard of education they get there is commensurate with the fees they pay. So the question now is why can't our own government do same? Instead of peddling the same lies for decades that government can't provide the most basic infrastructures and services such as quality education for her citizens. This is food for thought for everyone, or else we can't handle the BOOMERANG EFFECT.

These people are just too confused, NANS is even worse than PDP, I don't know what they are saying!
I was expecting them to block ABUJA-KADUNA road and ABUJA-LOKOJA road for 48hrs ir even protest and block major streets in abuja, they are there shouting and ranting in ekiti where nothing will happen!

I don't jst understand, when d strike started they were busy running about governors collecting money, now they want to resume to show off!

Abeg, ASUU should collect all their money before they resume ooo, if not, I'l tag them the most stupid set of people in history, a senator earns over 30M monthly and a professor 400K haba, e no make sense.
