A couple in Michigan have welcomed a healthy set of quintuplets after a 32-week pregnancy. Jessica Hicks, 28, from Tyrone Township, gave birth to three boys and two girls after a month on bed rest at Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor - a first for the hospital. The babies, who weighed between 3lbs 7oz and 4lbs 6oz were conceived with the help of IVF and born via cesarean section between 10.38am and 10.41am They were named, in order of birth, Parker Michael, Carol Marie, Emmett Ryan, Nicole Lynn and Ryker James. Dad Robert Hicks, 32, a mechanic and truck driver, was overwhelmed with joy following the birth. He told Mlive.com: 'It was amazing just seeing all five of them all at once. We were all filled up with joy and tears and happiness.' Mrs Hicks, who works in a dental office, was admitted to hospital on August 5, in order to help delay the birth for as long as possible so that the babies could grow. Her goal was to reach September 1 - which she surpassed by four days, delivering at 32 weeks. In an interview during her wait in hospital, at 29 weeks, Mrs Hicks described the moment she found out there were five babies, admitting that she 'felt every emotion possible. . . 'I don't think I knew what to think the first few days,' she said. 'We're blessed to have them, don't get me wrong. It's just a life changing experience. . . I think my mindset will be completely different (when I see them).' 'It was amazing just seeing all five of them all at once. We were all filled up with joy and tears and happiness' Mr Hicks was equally stunned by the news. 'I was a little mind boggled,' he said. 'When they found the fifth one I was like, "Oh my gosh, how am I supposed to handle this?" It will be enjoyable but a headache at the same time.' The couple, who already have a three-year-old son, Colton, struggled to conceive for a year before turning to IVF, and endured eight rounds before finally getting pregnant. They were keen for him to have a sibling, so immediately turned to IVF again when they were ready for a second - little did they know that they would have to prepare for a third, fourth, fifth and sixth as well. This time, Mrs Hicks became pregnant on the first round of IVF, and an early ultrasound indicated that she was carrying twins, with a predicted due date of October 26. This was not so surprising, given that there are twins in both her and her husband's families. But a second ultrasound the following week revealed there to be two more babies, and a third, on March 20th, revealed the presence of a fifth baby. 'Three ultrasounds in a row they found more babies,' Mrs Hicks said. 'Once we finally grasped [the idea of] the four babies we came here and they found five.' The team caring for Mrs Hicks were both impressed with her progress, and excited to be part of such a rare delivery. Dr Cosmas Vandeven, director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at the hospital, told Mlive.com: 'She has beaten the odds. . . She again is way ahead of most average numbers that should be. 'She deserves all the credit for what she has done. She is unbelievable. . . I think it's a reflection of her incredibly positive attitude and good fortune that her body has accepted these five babies and not going into preterm labor. I think her positive attitude is a big part of that.' The couple know that they have a challenging year ahead, and have had to make extensive changes to their two-bedroom, one-bathroom home. Five cribs, donated by friends and family, have been installed in the basement, while the home is also set to get an upgraded laundry room with two washers and two dryers. They expect to get through approximately 300 diapers a week and are accepting all donations gratefully. 'Our whole living room is full of totes (of donations),' Mrs Hicks said. 'We've been blessed with a lot of generous donations.' The family will also have to consider changes to their modes of transportation - at the moment they have three five-seater cars. 'We're going to have to buy a cargo van!' Mrs Hicks said. As for little Colton, he can't wait to start playing big brother. 'He loves babies. He talks to my belly, pats my belly,' Mrs Hicks said. 'He'll do fine.' http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2414023/Michigan-couple-welcome-set-quintuplets-born-hospital.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

Congratulations Oh. Her System is very good all the 5 eggs fertilised, some try 2 or 3 times and even one doesn't fertilise See why I love Oyibo, so honest and open. If na us here it will be a Church Testimony, giving the Glory to a certain Pastor who "declared", the IVF part convienently left out, let's forget the obvious that it is multiple birth after years of not having a child, All glory is to Pastor, forgetting the Doctor who held your hands when you cried and assured you it will be fine. God makes IVF successful but let us be honest about it so other women will stop rushing to prayer camps and go and try God Given Scientific ways to concieve. See the other thread, a woman wouldn't give direct clear answers on her Mysterious Pregnancy, people who questioned were called Haters, Luckily she or he showed himself/ herself and was multiply banned by spambot obviously trying to sell a story for desperate woman to buy. I wish they could be organized excursions to NAPTIP, some of you will faint when you realise what Pastors, members are capable of in this miracle baby business 3 Likes |

I'm really happy for the safe delivery, and for the couple. Science is amazing! If this was in a Nigerian hospital, it would have most likely been a different outcome, and probably not a positive one. |

magkhan: Cut the sentiment, and face facts! Let me ask you a question - if you were carrying quintuplets, and had the option of giving birth in Nigeria or the United States? Which would you choose? If the average Nigerian hospitals are that great, why do Nigerians who have the option to fly out not patronise Nigerian hospitals when they need an emergency operation? This is NOT about patriotism, this is about safeguarding oneself and not taking risks when there's no need to. |

Wow. If it's naija the couple would have started begging Fed Gov't to intervene. Btw, God is great o. How did her womb contain them? God gave women power to do the unthinkable i must say. |

Congratulations to the couple and may God continue to protect the little cuties and also continue to bless their parents. Amen. I also thank God for science. Science has done more good than harm. Kudos to scientists. I'm using this oppotunity to pray for all TTC couples, may God meet you at the point of your needs, either naturally or through assisted means. May God smile His face on you and crown every step you take with success. Amen. 1 Like |

prettyrosefave: @debrief, how is God not involved in the conception of 5 kids? how did they stay in there for 32 weeks? how did they grow after the doctor put in there the embryo? hushhhhhh, pls stay within the topic. would just be good you put a congratulatory comment and watch the rest. maybe you refuse to realise that the doctor only did a stage one thing but so many other stages where involved that doctors never never knew about. Did you read my post well before you jumped on with so many stories? Read paragraph 2 "God Makes IVF successful" Also read where I clearly creditted scientific break throughs to God. So your explanation justifies going to lie and deny other trying to concieve women the opportunity to get help until its late abi? Am sorry I won't endorse such hypocrisy and pretention. God doesn't accept lies, Don't hide under Christianity and lie. All those stories have no head or tail, why should in laws throw someone out because of IVF, let them go get educated on it simple, because of that it doesn't justify lying and pretending. 2 Likes |

debrief08: Your first post as people running to prayer camp is op. Why that? Amazingly I read the medical newsletter from one of these popular churches, where donor egg /sperm is advised, where the man has low sperm and the woman has low quality egg, IUI and IVF was not left out. So stip digressing by saying people should stop running to prayer camp. Cos they sell those papers to educate them on assisted method too even still puting their hope on God. I wonder if you know couples must have tried naturally and in the process two three years must have gone, so why saying I meant they should delay before trying ivf? Abi you don't know you must be certified by a doctor? Or some medical test must prove ivf or iui is the option? I sure advise anyone trying ivf not to say a thing of sure to their inlaws, you have kids naturally, be happy and not tell people to herald their ivf procedure to their inlaws who don't know anything about it and would see it as wasting of their son's money. Wisdom is profitable in all. As for other woman benefiting, as far as they go to the clinic when it comes to that point of natural trial doest help, their doctors will advise accordingly. All my stories is to make readers here learn not you. Keep your ivf procedure to yourself, advise a friend or even colleague or family who you see delaying to consider it, or better ask if you can know the medical history and advise accordinly, not all is ivf ivf. Like when when one has blocked tubes and you have the ivf means, why waite for years to go bye, prayerfully choose a good fertility clinic for you procedure. In all, God can look above all medical results and give children miraculously, I believe in miracles, yet thank God for science. Don't say u wana educate inlaws but you can use your situation to help them when you see them suffering what you suffered by educating the individual or persons, of which that is the best time to mention it so as to make yourself an example. 2 Likes |
