** State-of-the-art 90MW Bresson AS power plant set to be commissioned during the fourth quarter of 2014.
** If the “current momentum is sustained power outage should be a thing of the past in Nigeria in five years on.”

By Anayo Okolie

Chairman of Bresson A.S. Nigeria, Mr. Gbenga Olawepo, has commended the milestones so far achieved by the federal government in reforming the power sector, especially as reflected in the successful privatisation of the electricity distribution (DISCOS) and generating companies (GENCOS).

Olawepo, whose firm is building the first state-of-the-art 90mw power plant at Magboro, the Lagos corridor of Ogun State, gave the commendation in Abuja at the weekend while leading his company’s experts for consultations with the Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo, stressing that if the “current momentum is sustained power outage should be a thing of the past in Nigeria in five years on.”

According to Olawepo, ‘”the reform rests on two legs; privatisation of operation of existing companies and the promotion of independent power generation through Greenfield IPPs. We need to see more support for the IPPs to come on stream. They are the ones that are bringing additional capacities.”

Olawepo said his firm “is not just business but a passion driven by the realisation that making power available makes industries and jobs to spring up; it makes poverty disappear and engenders sustainable development.”

The Abuja meeting is in furtherance of the achievement of company’s short and long term objectives including the completion of the ongoing 90 megawatts plant at Magboro, and the review of company’s feats in the expansion of private sector participation in power generation and distribution in the country.

Sources said the reviews are coming against the background of the ongoing unbundling of the old National Electric Power Authority (NEPA)/Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in the generation, distribution and consumption of power, in view of government concerted drive for effective power supply and the age-old expectation of the citizenry for an uninterrupted power supply.

Bresson, according to a statement, is a leading independent electricity producer in Nigeria and emerging markets, leading the development of power generating plants using gas and coal, to actively participate in renewable energy via environmentally friendly technology. It is also committed to the raising of alternative energy to provide affordable electricity supply for the socioeconomic development of the country.

The company said it is poised to attain leadership position in the area of power generation in Nigeria and Africa, evening up to contributing to the socioeconomic development of a country of nearly 167million people. Through its efforts, power outage is to be made a thing of the past, leading to improvement in the peoples’ quality of life. It will eventually reduce poverty by making available the needed energy for growth and development.

It strategic partnership and vision over the next decade is what propels Bresson’s advancement as industry leader. The firm was conceived in the wake of the Lagos State/Enron partnership. It was then the only IPP without financial involvement of any State or Federal Government. This project has evolved through the years seeking the right policy environment including the availability of a cost recoverable tariff for the grid, credible off-taker and reliable fuel supply.

On the 28th of February 2012, an EPC contract was executed. The plant has a configuration of 2 units of GE LM 6000. In 2004, the project received the approval of Federal Government as an IPP to sell electricity under a Power Purchase Agreement to NEPA and subsequently PHCN. It has the full cooperation of the Nigerian government and in collaboration with IEG of Slovakia [EPC Contractor] and General electric, USA [Equipment supplier]. The project is set to be commissioned during the fourth quarter of 2014.

Bresson AS is a responsible corporate citizen committed to maintaining the highest standard of safety for workers, the workplace and communities, where it operates in accordance with International Best Practice. It treats the environment with care by ensuring that operational methods and technologies are in accordance with existing international protocols and conventions and in compliance with Nigerian Laws and Regulations.

If Tinubu didn't invite enron we would still be in darkness I believe. Otherwise lagos would have been a 24 / 7 light state. Thank Tinubu for the foresight. Obj made sure it didn't happen under his watch that Lagos would have power 24/7 and Abuja in darkness.

@OP! You always tongue lashed Fashola on every project news that starts with "set to" and I vividly remembered you saying on a thread that news on projects that has set to in them would not amount to nothing and that GEJ don't do such.

So, tell me, how can you justify yours now?

Note: I am not from the south-west and I don't do support political parties, rather, I prefer to vote credible candidates.

Or were you being hypocritical when you were saying those things?
