ASUU Strike: NANS Blocks Highway In Port Harcourt In Protest by mrniceguyuc: 6:50pm On Sep 10, 2013
TRAFFIC flow along the busy East-West road was stalled for more than one hour around the Choba junction, on the outskirt of Port Harcourt when students of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) took over the road in protest.

The students, under the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) were protesting the prolonged industrial action by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

One of the leaders of the protest and a representative of the NANS, Jonah Adokiye, bemoaned the effect of this face-off on Nigerian students. He stated that the lingering strike action had driven the average Nigerian student to resort to crime, thereby increasing crime rate in the country.

He also said that the strike action will prolong the stay of students in schools, which will also attract extra cost as students would be compelled to pay school fees based on the number of years they stay in school.

"The strike is taking its toll on the Nigerian student, you can only imagine what a lot of Nigerian students had been forced to get involved in as a result of this time waste. That is not to talk about the fact that our time is being wasted as this strike continues. We are not happy about this situation, hence this protest", Adokiye said.
