Hi everyone! I need serious help on how to handle this.
Am writing to you as I cry because this has spelt doom to my whole family. My mum almost
died from shock the other day as am also confused at the thought of my siz not going to America after winning a Diversity Visa programme whatever.
She has been going out with a pastor and no one suspected he was positive till yesterday when we demanded to know his status and he said he was positive.

Imagine she applied for green card of which she has been sent forms to fill and return only to discover that she is . What do we do? She is very healthy and full of life and last year December she was HIV negative. Is it mandatory to test HIV before entering America?

Please any helpful info on this as she is contemplating suicide. We are all down.

OMG some beast in form of men, The pastor deserves to be shot. He knew he was positive and lead her on. What a sick excuse of a man!!!

sorry to hear that though but they wont give her the visa once she tested hiv +ve.when she would go for med examination at Lagos, they would give her a form to fill  whether she wants to get tested or not and they would say it is optional but once you say no ,girl forget it you won't get the visa. I am sorry take heart but they don't give visas to anyone who tests hiv +ve.

Under18, relax. You might find it hard to believe but it really is not that serious. Tell your sister to use the visa to go to America and once she gets there, she should get tested again. Once the tests come back positive (they most likely will), they would recommend that she take HAART (Combination of drugs that would slow the rate at which HIV turns into Aids). Since she has been diagnosed early, she should be able to live for 25-30 years as long as she stays on her medication. So, as you can see, 25-30 years using the current medication is still a very long time to live. Also, there are other HIV medicines that are showing strong signs of killing the virus that are still in testing phase (Should be out in 10 years or less if it works). Best of luck.

Under_18, I'm so sorry to hear the news. I looked on the US State Dept site and didn't see anything about HIV status disqualifying ppl. I don't think that HIV status is considered. Here's a link:

Believe me your sister is not the only immigrant who is HIV positive. Tell her to come to America if it is possible. Afeni is correct. With drugs & heath care she can live a long life. Once she is here she should test again (as Afeni said).

But main thing, be calm, supportive and go along as planned. Ok? Keep us updated please.

I am very sorry about this under18. God will take control - take afeni and chinani's advices. She will be more likely to live a bit longer. That pastor should be stoned.

sorry dear.as hard as this might sound its not the end of the world for your family esp your sister.that pastor will face reap badly.as for your sister she should get her viral load and CD4 done. that will determine if she is o start taking anti retroviral drugs, these drugs are miracle drugs and reduce the amount of hiv virus in the body to nearly undetectable levels. your sister can live for more than 20 years. keep the faith.

hmmm they might not say anything about rejecting HIV postive ppl on their website, why would they? that's discrimination but im sure that that's what they do. i also had to do the test, it's not compulsory but then they are like if u dont take, it could adversely affect ur chances of getting visa. but in your sistas case, i dont think they should care cos shes not applying for a visa is she? she's actually won one and if they take it from her on basis of her serostatus, sue the embassy to hell! need a lawyer? holla at me

Read carefully and don't be deceived or mislead. I will address the two concerns you raised.

1. concerning your sisters HIV status. She may not be Positive. She should go ahead and get tested. I am a Doctor here in the US and believe me, couples have been tested and one party found to be HIV negative while the other is positive. It is imperative she gets tested so treatment can start. These days especially in the developed world, HIV is not a death sentence.

2. Concerning her US Diversity Visa situation, A candidate is permanently INELIGIBLE to receive a US immigrant visa if you fall in the categories listed below of which HIV is one. Heres the link: http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/publicaffairs/factsheets/HIVfs.htm

(a) Has a communicable disease of public health significance e.g HIV

(b) Has a Mental disease that can constitute danger to the American public

(c) Has a Felony (Criminal record)

IF she has the VISA already she can come to the US. But if she doesnt have it, one of the requirements is getting tested for HIV. From your post, I presumes she has the Visa already, in which case nothing stops her from buying her ticket and coming here.

I empathize with your family especially your sister, but its not the end of the road for her. My advise to her is first of all to get tested to know her status. If she turns out positive she can start on a healthy diet and combination medication that will improve her immune system and slow the progression of the disease. she can still live a full life.

Let me know when she gets her results, I might be able to help. There are many programs by the UN and other Charity organization from the US to Africa that I will explore for her. I am in paediatrics but I have a lot of friends in Public health and communicable dieseases. Yours is definately not a hopeless situation.

Your advice to her was great, however, the link only addresses "pre-winning" the visa lottery, it doesnt talk about the procedure to actually obtaining the VISA. Winning the lottery is one thing, actually getting the visa is another. There is a disclaimer that states winning the Visa loterry doesnt guarantee automatic VISA issuance. Look on the USCIS website you will see waht i mean.

As for the Pastor, it's really unfortunate that beasts parade themselves as sheeps, and to think that A supposedly man of God would do this to a member of his flock is unimaginable. God will deal with him appropriately.

sorry to hear this news.  please pray.  first, your sister needs to get tested.  as the previous poster said, she may very well not have it.  however, it is much easier for a woman to get it than a man.  a man can sleep with 300 hiv+ women before he might get it.  1 out of 300.  with women, it is more like 1 out of 5 odds.  if she has it, she needs to evaluate which country would be the best.  just because she comes to the usa doesnt mean she will have access to medical insurance.  medical insurance in the usa is about 97,600 naira per month.  so unless she has a good job, she might be better off in naira where the drugs are cheaper.  this is very sad, but be careful before you expose the minister.  he might sue you!

I might be wrong but i dont think they will let her into the country if she tested positive. You know what i am 100% sure they won't. But you will find out soon am sure. Goodluck!

Under18 really sorry to hear about your situation. Only God knows what your family is going through right now. The truth is your sister needs to test for HIV real soon, and the sooner the better. The chances of her beating the odds will depend on her starting medication as soon as possible.
