Love golf to bits (offcourse interest stemmed from domination of d tiger).
will probably start playing very soon.
anyone watching the opens starting 2morrow? no tiger means level playing field as long as leftie (phil mickleson) doesn't forget his putting skills across the sea!
Open are notorius for difficult greens and absurd tees

I might be watching. I usually watch all the majors but like you I'm a huge Tiger fan. I just feel its going to be so boring without him cry Garcia, Els, Mickelson, Singh and the lot of them have no fire and no drama. Golf will def suffer a loss in viewership in the absence of Tiger.

Gamine,

Your profile says female, so do you have men right-hand clubs? is it complete 14-set?

This would help as I dont have to bring my clubs along to naija. also you in Lagos or Abuja?

hi, if you are really serious about the golf tour, you can play at eiter ikoyi club or ikeja club in lagos. i know you can rent clubs @ ikoyi club range for that purpose. there are quite a lot of other courses. Sagamu in ogun state is also an option. i hear Abeokuta course is a absolute horror (never tried it) and there is the miccom course in osun, looks decepptively simple (been there once but couldnt play cos was there for an event). hope above info is helpful

Golf in Nigeria has a long way to go!!!
Re: Golf In Nigeria by landis(m): 5:30pm On Jul 28, 2008
@wolerex,

I emailed ikoyi club if non-members allowed but never got response back since 3months.

thats not enouraging. is Sagamu course still active? you need to be staff of WAPCO. I used to play there in the 90s.

I would like to arrange things down as very busy schedule when around.

@Gamine,
ok. where are the clubs?

I can always pick in any location and return back to same.

The clubs are in abuja
Re: Golf In Nigeria by wolerex(m): 1:27pm On Jul 29, 2008
hi landis,

there are quite a number of clubs across the country but most require you to be a member or the guest of a member. ikoyi club, allows members' guests to play for token pre-defined fees BUT i dont think it allows "walk-in" day players.

I think sagamu is still active, though its more of a brown than green. i know miccom allows guests of the hotel to play on their course. the akwa-ibom course in uyo also allows the guests of its hotel to play for a minimal fee.

i wouldnt worry too much about the clubs, IF you plan to play at any of the established clubs, you will get clbs for hire there. hope this helps!!

wolerex,

thanks for the feedback. do you know if there 5-hole course with good drive-range?

something for beginners and amateurs?

This could be way to encourage middle income Nigerians into the game.

Gamine,
I will get across to you when in Abuja. I would try out IBB golf Course.
Re: Golf In Nigeria by Gamine(f): 10:50am On Jul 30, 2008
Cool.
Re: Golf In Nigeria by wolerex(m): 5:37pm On Jul 30, 2008
Hi again Landis! you should enjoy IBB Golf course, havent played it, but conventional wisdom is that its pretty good. as for the existence of ranges and mini courses (being anything below 9 holes), i dont know of any existing ones. I will ask one of the pro players at ikoyi club next week.

but you are right, more ranges, would attract higher interest to the game.

at Gamine, sounds like you are looking forward to landis coming to town! cheesy

Re: Golf In Nigeria by wolerex(m): 6:00pm On Jul 30, 2008
its actually a good way to de-stress, if you want to play in lagos, you can come as a guest to ikoyi club! give it a thought. it will slowly consume you if you get into it, but its fantastic for de-stressing
Re: Golf In Nigeria by Gamine(f): 6:23pm On Jul 30, 2008
are you giving me an invite??

i don't have clubs here
Re: Golf In Nigeria by wolerex(m): 6:33pm On Jul 30, 2008
that can be arranged. Send me an email, if you truly want to play and i will sort it out for you. to answer, your question, yes you are invited.

Seem you have contacts in Ikoyi Club.

It would be nice if you also give Ikoyi Club my feedback.

Email sent over 3month and no response.

I hope they know: emails are meant to be replied to.

Enjoy the game with Gamine and make sure you follow all the rules from green to bunkers etc.

@ landis - ikoyi club being a members club can be snotty! i am actually shocked they even have an email address for enquiries! but i will find out from the course manager next week. but drop me a line when coming to town, you know numbers makes the game more fun!

@ gamine - fret not, its not what you think wink, bunkers are obstacles designed to make your life hell on the course
