Google will start migrating its Oracle MySQL database system to MariaDB; a fork of MySQL. No official reason has been given for this decision but it is believed that it is Google’s reply to Oracle after both companies were engaged in a legal tussle over allegations that Google infringed on Java programming language by applying portions of java code’s into the successful Android operating system.

Google dumps MySQL for MariaDB

A federal court ruled in favor of Google but the decision is currently being appealed. This week, Jeremy Cole, Google’s Senior Systems Engineer revealed that Google was dumping was dumping MySQL for MariaDB at the Extremely Large Databases conference at Stanford University

Google is working with MariaDB Foundation to release a patch which will update MariaDB 10.0 to enable seamless migration of thousands of MySQL relational databases to MariaDB.

“We’re running primarily on [MySQL] 5.1 which is a little outdated, and so we’re moving to MariaDB 10.0 at the moment,” Cole maintains

MariaDB was forked from MySQL by Montly Widenius who apparently created MySQL for Oracle. The reason behind his decision was due to lack of community participation. Montly wanted a system where many could contribute with recommendation and suggestion that would generally lead to more improvement.

Montly Widenius did not create MySQL for Oracle, Oracle bought Sun which owned MySQL which was formerly owned by MySQL AB which was co- founded by Mr. Widenius.
