Sep 23 (Lagos) - Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, a Canadian insurance company will acquire Blackberry for $ 9 a share in a deal worth 4.7 billion US Dollars. Trading of Blackberry shares was halting today afternoon at the Toronto Stock Exchange just before this was announced. Fairfax Financial is a holding company whose primary business is in insurance. Fairfax is also BlackBerry's largest shareholder. It is led by billionaire Prem Watsa, a chemical engineer by training who has run the firm since the mid-1980s. The announced deal comes only three days after BlackBerry pre-announced dismal second-quarter results, including plans to write down almost $1 billion in unsold phone inventory and layoff 40% of its employees.
