Daily Manna: Forty Days of Fear

TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 17:12-24

KEY VERSE: "And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days" (1 Samuel 17:16).

"It is a poor thing to fear that which is inevitable" says Tertullian, a third-century church father while speaking of death.

From our text, David, the youngest son of Jesse, heard Goliath bragging in defiance of Israel and God. He also saw the fidgeting and shivering hosts of Israel before arrogrant Goliath, head of the Philistine army threatening to overrun them. Goliath came out morning and evening in complete battle gear and paraded himself in front of Israeli army because he wanted them to be dismayed and afraid. He was able to torment the Israelites for forty days using the psychological weapon of fear.

In any contest, it is always useful to demoralize one's opponents and strike fear in their hearts to make them cower or fight with apprehension. The devil uses this strategy against us as believers because he wants to make us fearful. But we must put on the whole armour of God and remember that we are wrestling against spiritual giants.

Giants never completely go away by themselves until we face and fight them frontally. The devil engages and infiltrates the minds of his targets with fearful thoughts of negative consequences. The longer you let him speak, the more demoralized you will become. Many bekievers are afraid of all kinds of Goliaths to the extents that they do not venture to preach the gospel.

But put the fear behind you and confront the giant before you. The Lord will give you the victory you desire.
