No Work, No Pay As FG Stops Varsity Lecturers’ Salary by Nobody: 7:43am On Oct 02, 2013 |
The Federal Government has invoked the ‘no work, no pay’ labour rule against striking university lecturers as their industrial action enters the 93rd day with no end in sight. Some of the federal university vice chancellors have not paid the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) members their August and September salaries in compliance with the government’s directive. Some branch chairmen of ASUU see the government and vice chancellor’s move as an attempt to break the rank of their members, insisting that their members are resolute on the ongoing strike. Some ASUU branch chairmen told Daily Sun that text messages were sent to vice chancellors to apply the ‘no work, no pay’ labour rules to academic staff on strike and that the decision had affected the payment of salary of non-academic staff in the university system. According to one of the branch chairmen, he and his exco confronted their university management over the salary delay and the he showed them the text message asking them not to pay salary to ASUU members. He stressed that the ‘no work, no pay’ labour rule had never worked, pointing out that ASUU has a counter-measure, which was ‘no pay, no work,’ and that the union was not on strike because of salary increment. Sources stated that at the ASUU Ibadan zonal meeting held at the University of Lagos, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Rahmon Bello, tried in vain to defend the delay of September salary. Also, the ASUU chairman, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Dr. Biodun Badmus, told Daily Sun that the vice chancellor got text messages not to pay salaries and revealed that the university had not received August salary from government. His words: “Any vice chancellor that has paid August salary did so using the university’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). We are not bothered about the salary issue, because at the end of the day, they will still pay us.” Meanwhile, the union has faulted the conduct of Post-UTME examination by the universities during the strike without the involvement of academic staff and urged the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to intervene on the issue |

You people are just rejocing for nothing. Some of these lecturers are already lecturing on contract in private universities. Some are doing part time lecturing in neighbouring countries while others are engaged in other businesses. You think they ll just fold their arms and be waiting for FG to pay them? Now, FG cannot also sack them because the number of professors and PHD holders we have in this country are not even enough for the number of universities on ground. That is why you see some departments are not given accreditation. If FG sacks them, where will they get profs and Phds to replace them? Or you think FG can produce professors overnight? That's why at the end of the day, FG will still pay them all their arrears. You can't operate a university without professors and PHDs holders. If its a first degree holders thing, FG would ve easily intimidated them but, its not so in this case o. Think twice. FG knows this fact very well that's why they are running around whipping sentiment from people like you. If you know something, you students should face the FG to keep to their agreement with ASUU. Now let me give you this info, do you know that ASUU has a cooperative they are running over the years and because of the no work no pay they asked their members to come and collect money from the cooperative if they are in serious need. Funny thing is that its only a few of them who have gone for that money. If they are dying of hunger as you think, why haven't they rushed the cooperative? Why is it that its only a few of them that have gone for the money?. And the ones that went, took just small amount from the cooperative. When we get this info from some of them that are close to us, we pity people like you who think that FG will win them. Keep dreaming 1 Like |

Instead of federal government to find better ways of replying to the strike action especially as the non-academic union has joined, they are devising more ways to fight back. How then can the strike end? The grass (Students) are really suffering in this battle. *folds hands, relax and watch them fight and anticipate the winner while doing my internship* 1 Like |

ojingbe: The Federal Government has invoked the ‘no work, no pay’ labour rule against striking university lecturers as their industrial action enters the 93rd day with no end in sight.Good one! You don't get paid without working. Lets all(student & lecturers) feel it! Some ASUU branch chairmen told Daily Sun that text messages were sent to vice chancellors to apply the ‘no work, no pay’ labour rules to academic staff on strike and that the decision had affected the payment of salary of non-academic staff in the university system. Why? Please they should be paid! According to one of the branch chairmen, he and his exco confronted their university management over the salary delay and the he showed them the text message asking them not to pay salary to ASUU members.who do these people(ASUU) think they are?- the "all in all" of universities? Time shall tell! Also, the ASUU chairman, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Dr. Biodun Badmus, told Daily Sun that the vice chancellor got text messages not to pay salaries and revealed that the university had not received August salary from government.Day Dreamers! Meanwhile, the union has faulted the conduct of Post-UTME examination by the universities during the strike without the involvement of academic staff and urged the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to intervene on the issuethis's just the beginning! You(ASUU) don't own the university! |

ennon92: C these useless ppl o, so they want to collect salary they haven't worked for...God punish u all. They should better call it off if they re hungry. if you don't pay them, they will also not work or they will begin work on assumption of having done the work you didn't pay them for. E.g if a school was a month to exams before the strike/ no work, no pay policy. Whenever they resume, they will begin work on assumption that they have taught, done exams and are ready for a new session. How about that? Academics are not those in whom such policies work, the government will only keep compounding the problem. Those who owe should pay and not threaten people. We all can see the mago mago way PHCN was handed over without settling its workers and pensioners, is that how to solve problems. |
