Nigerians executed in Indonesia
Two Nigerian convicts have been executed in Indonesia, seven years after being caught trying to smuggle heroin into the country.

Samuel Okoye and Hansen Nwaolisa were executed by firing squad in the early hours of Friday, officials said.

The executions were timed to mark the UN anti-drugs day, Indonesia's anti-narcotics agency reportedly said.

Drug traffickers are often sentenced to death in Indonesia, but the penalty has not been carried out since 2004.

The two men, aged 37 and 40, have been held at a high-security prison on Nusakambangan island, central Java, since their conviction for trying to smuggle some 7kg (16lb) of heroin into Indonesia.

"A firing squad of 12 people executed them in an outdoor area some 3km [2 miles] away from their prison," provincial prisons chief Bambang Winahyo told AFP news agency.

The two had made pleas for clemency to the president in 2004, but they were turned down.

They are better off dead. Anyone who peddles that poison does not deserve to live. They are all scumbags.

this topic has to sides to it. by keeping them in jail, you are spending tax money for their meals, and living expensives. but by killing them you are basically committing murder. and it is like living in the "eye for an eye" times.

Capital punishment has never been a successful deterrent for serious or even capital crimes. It never solved the armed robbery menace in Nigeria and I don' t see it stopping the drug problem in Indonesia. The states that have abolished it did so for a reason, they are not deceived by the false perception of the efficacy of state killings as an absolute deterrent. Drug wars are not won by killing the messengers (they are of little consequnece in the drug food chain). When there is little or no demand, supplies are bound to peter out. Yeah I know that might be getting overly optimistic, but seriously the Indonesian government need to consider other options beyond capital punishment.

My problem is:

When most Nigerians travel, they bother not to study the laws of the country they're travelling to.

Why beg for mercy when you break a law punishable by death. It's their law and there's really 'nothing' we can do about it
