We may all differ about what constitutes good suya – based on health concerns - but we all agree it should taste good. Grilled meat in whatever form is something to look forward to if you enjoy a once in a while treat at some of Abuja’s popular suya spots. Down here what to expect when taking suya in Abuja;

In Abuja like in many Nigerian cities Suya is served mostly in the evenings beginning from 5 pm when the fire is put on till late into the night sometimes early morning. Most people who take it upon themselves to enjoy this special meat grills see it as a light meal for outdoor hangouts with friends or dates.

Variety and Pricing
Price of most Suya in Abuja starts from N200, what you can get for that amount is a single meat steak usually beef but occasionally lamb, gizzard, liver or kidney. There’s also Chicken Suya but usually goes for N1200 or more. Sometimes as a substitute you can have grilled fish served with chips and other coduments or even shawarma starting from N1000 (although it’s not regarded as suya).

How Suya is Served
Suya could be served on a flat plate if you’re eating it within or served as take-away usually on newspaper wrapped in black nylon (popularly called leather) and it’s usually with an assortment of sliced tomatoes, onions, lettuce and granulated pepper or even local masa.

Popular Abuja Suya Spots
Most of the tastiest Suya in Abuja is sold at recreational gardens or along busy roads. So far the most popular Suya spot in all of Abuja is Yahuza suya and they’re in Garki 2 (Garki Supermarket) and Wuse (behind AP plaza and near Amigos Supermarket). But a few other suya spots also make themselves felt at various parts of the metropolis such as along Salt lake street in Maitama (near Blinkers plaza) or the Sharwarma spot of Drumstix in Asokoro near AYA or along Aminu Kano Crescent in Wuse 2.

Health implications
However keep in mind the health risks of taking Suya namely; bad breath, tooth decay and potential risks to your liver (from eating red meat). Shawarma seems more healthier than Suya although more expensive but for an outdoor treat especially on a date, it might be worth it.

Warning
Instead of having beef, lamb Suya or any other form of red meat, opt for Chicken, grilled fish or shawarma instead as they are both nutritious and relatively less harmful to the body.

@ op, this topic is very informative. I personally dislike 'suya' the meat placed on sticks and close to fire. Such meat like u rightly pointed out do not get well cooked. Instead I prefer the 'balangu' version. Balangu is well prepared and far better than 'suya'. Whenever I'm in the Northern area, I always relish my 'balangu' with 'gurasa' and chilled bottles of beer.

Yeah indeed red meat Suya isn't always good but fish or chicken Suya isn't that bad!
