Wat de govt has done is jus to encourage our economy.

I think the important question is; can Nigerians afford brand new vehicles? Yes? How many then?

Do you think people are happy using second-hand things? Who does not desire good things?

See, if people can afford to buy new cars, the government wouldn't have to make any policy to that effect (of stopping importation of used cars), the importers will be the ones to stop bringing in 'Tokunbo'. Why? Cos demand would have reduced.

Until we get there, the government should be reasonable with this.

Your comparison doesn't make any sense.

An automobile is the second most expensive single purchase many will ever make, for those that don't own their own homes, the most expensive purchase. You can't compare buying a pair or trainers to buying a car.

Besides, the Nigerian economy is being hurt by your leaders. Where do you think the revenue realised by the tariffs placed on personal imports will end up?

I think encouraging the Nigerian economy should start much further up the supply chain. Your Government.

The policy is good as long as minimum wage is increased. By the way how many factories are actively manufacturing not assembling?

oweniwe: you are talking and reasoning like this because you are a consumer of goods and services, not a producer or manufacturer or employer of labor. . If you are a producer. . . Of lets say steel rods. . . You want to employ more people and add value to your country. . . You will not be reasoning that way. . .

God will bless you. . That one day. . You will be buoyant enough to set up a farm, manufacturing company or service providing company. . Ordinary torch light mobile phone, we don't produce in nigeria. . God will bless you to establish a phone manufacturing company in nigeria. . . Wen you see the way massive importation of low end phones that you can comfortably produce wit the right support and policies, that will help you expand and employ more jobless graduates. . . You won't be thinking the way you are thinking

Nigerians are no fools.they patronize locally made goods at the right price and quality

ikaleguy:

Leave this fellow let him continue talking.

Tecno would NEVER have sold ONE phone in Nigeria if it was pitched at the same price as the Galaxy S4. They've now moved to become one of the best selling phone makers in Nigeria because people see the right blend of functionality and PRICE. Also they advertise relentlessly and make deals with Nigerian carriers.

If it was a Nigerian company, people would have patronized them like crazy at those prices.

There are many avenues the Government can use to help the likes of Innoson make more compelling vehicles and make their vehicles more attractive to Nigerians. These avenues do not have to take away or hinder the 'choice' aspect that Nigerian consumers deserve.

The US Government gave a large loan to Tesla Autos to help them come up with their concept. Their Tesla Model S sedan is now one of the best cars in the US, the loan has been repaid and Tesla is the rave of investors and consumers. The Government helps subsidize each car for around $5000 or so. They do not mandate an increase in price of Honda and Toyota vehicles to make Tesla motors more attractive. That is a responsible Government at work.

I still maintain anyone who thinks this is a good idea has to be seriously deranged. Either that or he/she is an innoson employee or a member of the FEC cheesy

And you feel this comment of yours makes any sense? Learn how to get your points across (if you have any) without resorting to verbal abuse. The points Iamswizz raised are very valid, and he wasn't rude either.

Well, here's the ONLY consumer vehicle Innoson currently makes

No sedans, only a 'luxury SUV' that is probably well out of the reach of most Nigerians. No regard on it the typical hardworking Nigerian would even LIKE this vehicle.

99.9% of their vehicles are buses. Did the FG think this through at all?!

I'll go with the theory that this was to appease their buddies at Coscharis et al. Make it unattractive for the common man to patronize tokunbo so more people are driven to buy the new vehicles at their inflated pricing.

With all due respect this vehicle has Chi..... written all over it. It is not strong and will not last and is not worth shoving down our throat. Why cant the Government get Toyota to build a plant in Nigeria?

@ FG,

Get Toyota to build a car manufacturing plant in Nigeria. Let's see this locally made cars for at least 2 years before implementing this money-making policy.

Motorcycles (used and unused) are banned in most States in the north for security reasons. This forced the common man to fall back on tokunbo vehicles as a last resort. I feel it is unfair for the Govenment to now make them less afordable especially since the local car manufacturing industry is not really functioning. Besides, how many people can aford these brand new locally made cars? Well, I guess the only option now left for the masses is to start pushing donkey carts.

It never worked before and it will not work even now.The government will not get the revenue but the markets will still be flooded. You must count 1 before 2. Is the climate ripe for the production of cars in Nigeria or it just the importation of brand new ones that you are talking about?

Re: Tariff On Imported Tokunbo Cars Raised by arumen(m): 10:48pm On Oct 04, 2013
Used car sales is not peculiar to our country. No matter how good an economy is, not everybody can still afford to buy new cars. Our government should concentrate in making basic amenities available viz : good roads, power, water, health care, education. If all these are put in place industries will thrive, and no one will need to barn anything to encourage anything. Our government completely lacks vision, and its a pity.
Re: Tariff On Imported Tokunbo Cars Raised by piagetskinner(m): 11:22pm On Oct 04, 2013
ose_o: While unpopular I am with the government on this one, they are not stopping you from bringing in the tokumbo cars, but you will have to pay to get them.

When government did the same thing with clothes a few years ago people screamed, yet look at that sector now in Nigeria it's booming.

Until the government made a move like this the automotive industry would never improve. The next step is for the government to stop using foreign produced cars, thereby directly funding the local industry. Can you imagine the sales of innoson if all the arms of government used only their cars?

And like all things in life, you get better with experience, innoson is a relatively new company, yet their new buses are quite good, so imagine where they can/will be in 10 years.
What does innoson produce? They produce buses, more than half the time.na bus we go come dey drive?...their designs are so lame

Palmoil?steel plants r dead, tyre manufacturing plants too r also dead...nothing seems to be workin, because our greedy political elites hav killed the system.. always want it all 4 themselves#SMh
Re: Tariff On Imported Tokunbo Cars Raised by Nobody: 12:37am On Oct 05, 2013
This policy won't scale through the Senate.

Tokunbo cars are already creating thousands of upper middle class in Nigeria. Many people use this as a means to trade and do what they can while staying put in Nigeria.

Did the FG think of the above before going ahead? Spare Part dealers? do you know how many millions of Nigerians have been able to pull out of poverty dealing in spare parts? So all of a sudden, their inventories will become near obsolete causing billions in loses? Because everyone will be looking to sell their used cars before time not buy or repair.
