ritababe: In a telephone interview he granted to Vanguard last Saturday concerning the tension that has gripped the nation’s aviation sector following last Thursday’s crash in Lagos and several other near air mishaps in Sokoto and Benin, Mr Joe Obi, the Special Adviser on Media to the Aviation Minister Princess Stella Oduah said there was nothing unusual about the situation.

Reacting to the reported incident of an air return from Benin to Abuja involving an Arik aircraft last Friday, he said it was nothing to worry about.
Said he: “I am not aware of the air return from Benin to Abuja which reportedly happened last Friday. But even if it happened, pilots who do so are usually applauded because it is a standard safety procedure to adopt when pilots are having landing difficulties. If this happens, it is not news.”
Also reacting to the emergency landing of a Kabo Airline aircraft at the Sokoto Airport which coincidentally occurred the same day, Obi stated that the Saudi Arabia bound plane only had a stop over at the Sokoto Airport to pick up additional passengers.
According to a statement he issued last Saturday evening:”On October 4, 2013, a Boeing 747-3 aircraft with Reg 5N-JRM, operated by Kabo Airlines arrived safely with all passengers and crew on board, following a landing incident at the Sokoto airport at 2100 GMT.

” The aircraft which departed from Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano was enroute Saudi Arabia when it had a stop-over at the Sokoto airport for passenger pick-up. “Preliminary reports indicate that the control tower gave the pilot clearance to land on Runway 08 but the captain, opted to use Runway 26, for reasons yet to be ascertained.
The 512 souls on board, made up of 494 passengers and 18 crew members landed safely. The aircraft however damaged parts of the Instruments Landing System (ILS) and came to a stop with deflated tyres. The FAAN emergency response apparatus acted swiftly to secure all souls on board and the aircraft.”

She is correct, the Nigerian airspace is secure. What is not secure is the airlines and their planes. Oduah is actually the best aviation minister Nigeria have ever come across. As for FFK that man is a character nudist

The first poster killed it with that pithy ripartee. One thousand likes for that post but on a serious note, this minister is so arrogant and insensitive that she could not even commiserate with the family of the deceased all she could think of is her plum job which she is doing badly any way. She could just hav e delegated her press person to handle but she had to muck it up herself.

Of course our Airspace is safe.......Its not as if there are rebels with "surface to air" missiles waiting to shoot commercial planes down.......or regular cases of tornados and typhoon winds that causes plane crashes regularly........or flocks of quela birds that hover close to airports and get sucked into engines resulting in crashes.

Its our Aviation practices that aren't safe.

How effective are our "Emergency response" team?? How trained and equiped are they??

How well are the planes checked by qualified and experienced engineers??

How are rickety planes allowed to operate without proper scrutiny??

Painting and re-tiling Airports doesn't translate to Aviation reforms.

fire is burning in our airspace, yet the honourable minister of Aviation is encouraging us to go home and have a bottle of coke. She further said "there is nothing unusual about the situation that has taken the lives of 15 and almost sparked a religious crisis within a week". Does she think we are all a bunch of stupid people?

The airspace is safe when diesel marketers like odua Stella face either their diesel or politics and leave professionals to run the aviation industry.

Same goes for the diamond woman of the petroleum industry. Aka desiani

Thebrightest: HOW TO CROSS ROAD IN NIGERIA..
1. Kindly look right and left for vehicles and okada...
2. Look up for aeroplane crash (very important)...
3. Look down for bomb...
4. Look side and back for kidnappers....
5. Hold ur handbag tight and watch d person beside u...
6. Then walk zig-zag to avoid stray bullets..
Then you are 45% SAFE to cross the road.
Pls, I've laughed my belly out o.

Yes, so safe with NCAA/pilots flying planes with visible cracks and pilots not obeying the Air Traffic Controllers' instructions? Where in the world do you find such grave mistakes? Minister, you are either so ignorant or very negligent.

Checks are normally carried out outside Nigeria and an NCAA engineer must accompany the plane to ascertain thorough compliance. Unfortunately, these corrupt government officials instead collect BRIBES from the airline operators and look the other way.

How are rickety planes allowed to operate without proper scrutiny??

These things happen because Aviation Ministry officials and those of the Regulatory body (NCAA) are BRIBED by the airline operators.

Painting and re-tiling Airports doesn't translate to Aviation reforms.
