I need help with determining which java textbooks to buy,I am stuck between two options one is Introduction to Java Programming by Daniel Liang(Pearson) the other is Java H̶̲̥̅̊ợ̣̣̇̇̇w̶̲̥̅̊ to Program by Deitel Deitel(Pearson) both are quite expensive so I would want to be sure of what will give me a good foundation as a total beginner and take me atleast to the intermediate levels.

You could try the book by Deitel and Deitel. Gives you a really solid introduction. Always try to make sure you solve all or most of the exercises behind each chapter. Improves your thinking.

I used Beginning Programming with Java for Dummies when I started doe - teaches the basics to get quickly started !! And that was my fisrt ever programming book !!

Learning java with core java volume 1 version 8. And am going on well with it. Although am in intermediate level when it comes to coding with vb.net.
I find a little similarity between the two languages but my knowledge in vb.net is really helping me a lot.

I wanted to go advanced i bought a textbook 'vb.net how to program' by Deitel. The book is good, but not as good as 'msdn.microsoft.com' although to learn programming u need to consult different materials. I ve read many materials before i found msdn to be the best.
If u want to learn java go to oracle website there u will found the best explanations. Deltel is good, but at times u will need to go online bfore u could understand so things in d txtbook.
U can learn programming on ur own sofr u ve good materials. I ve no one to call my programming teacher and today i writes thousands lines of codes.

lynda video tutorial is a java video tutorial. the name of the group that made the tutorial is lynda. you can get it on disk from a standard software shop that sell video tutorials.
