It can be put into good use for online registration and verification purposes.
If you have a foreign number, your business wont just be limited to nigerians only.
Your business clients and prospects will like to call you because your number depicts that you arent far from them and also the call cost will be cheaper than calling your nigerian number.

Remember every situation can be exploited including this service. It all comes down to how you intend to make use, good use of the service.
Take for instance, the internet, if the gov. decides to ban internet simply because of fraud, will that be justified? What about the good benefits the internet has to offer.
If Western Union gets banned because it indirectly facilitates fraud, will it be justified? What about a good number of people who make use of it for legit business transactions.

Also Webmasters and Internet marketers need U.S numbers to complete registrations on some classified sites
like ebay, craiglist etc.

Anyone can easily get accepted into high paying online survey program with a U.S number.

You will get lots of patronage on Freelance sites like Elance, freelancer, Fiverr etc if you have a U.S or foreign contact number.

If you make lots of international calls to a particular country, for instance calling your suppliers in China, your call cost will be alot cheaper
if you have a China number which your suppliers can reach you on and also you can call them at reduced cost with your own China number.
