nkem Kalu: V. I.O. is like police and have no right whatsoever to impose fine on u. Please try a competent court of jurisdiction and get a lawyer. u might just succeed to win a good case. However, the car might stay longer but u have 80% chances of winning the case and getting ur car back.best advice. |

OlowoB:....Listen bro, there is no way this guy will loose this case. A V. I. O. or whatever they call themselves cannot be a judge in its own case. Sitting on the road and pronouncing the guy guilty of an offence is the height of illegality I can ever think of. If they think the guy has committed an offence known to law, they should give him a fair trial in a court of competent jurisdiction. I think, all these law enforcement agencies take advantage of we Nigerians because they know we don't really have the time. the amount of money they are charging him for the demurrage and so on is enough for him to prosecute this case and at the end of the day, he will get damages paid to him. Yes, the court delays and so on may occur but justice must prevail and the officer who impounded the car will also be taught some lessons not to misbehave next time. afterall, who even told the V. I. O. officer that the license is fake? does he print one? And at the end of the day, the burden will be on him to prove to the court beyond reasonable doubt that the license is fake. And even if it is fake, the V. I. O. officer cannot constitute himself to a judge to ask the guy to go and pay fine. This is my simple submission. The whole thing is arrant nonsense. Again, he did not catch the guy with a printing machine faking the license |

Kayraph: My brother dont trust any Nigerian traffic/motorist officer especially those Lagos touts. Early this Year, I took a babe to the park for her to a bus while I parked my car off the road. I backed the main road while gisting with the babe. She pointed behind me asking "is that not your car" been towed by LASMA. Before I could get to them they`ve zoomed off with my car. I had to go asking for help and someone introduced me to a LASMA officer who live close by. He offered to help by calling those touts that towed my car. He told them that am presently with him. He asked them to include his own cut of the deal which is 5k. Thank God I understand some of the street slangs. I quickly collected their phone numbers from him. I went by myself to sort things out by paying their fine without receipt. I had to disguise as someone else otherwise the bill would have been very huge. It`s better to seek help from your enemy than from a Nigerian traffic /motorist officer. 1 Like |

Polio: Why are you driving with a fake driver's license in the first place? look my friend, u speak as though u are just getting to know the tricks of Nigeria authorities..... the so called fake drivers licence is the same licence issued by frsc. Immediately the new drivers licence came into law, they branded all previous drivers licence fake. if you doubt me, go apply for a renewal of ur drivers licence. they'll only sieze it and ask you to apply as afresh driver. i know cos i have also fallen victim to these heartless lagos vio... they saw my papers were accurate nd my safety gadgets complete and went ahead to slam a fake drivers licence on me. well the only difference btw i and the op is that i didn't get bed ridden so my deumorage wasn't high... i paid about 5k..... the oppressive nature of these bunch is ripening the conditions for a revolution..... some day we'll run these lastma, vio and police off lagos streets.. its quit terrible but op, i hope you find help the won't exploit you. 1 Like |

[/quote] @ all, thanks for all your help, advice and contributions, both those contributing on this thread and those who have contacted me via email and phone. I will never intentionally drive with a fake License. I got the License from FRSC Abeokuta and have been driving with it since 2011.but that is no longer the issue anymore as I have sorted out the new drivers licence and paid all the relevant fines. My only problem its with the demurrage charge. Going to the court is not an option because I do not have the wherewithal. @kayralph, you are hinting that this may be a scam. I am so surprised because you were among the first to offer to help me and we haVe spoken on the phone severally. I would have preferred to speak with you one on one, but since you have brought it to this thread. I have to state my own version. Your VIO officer promised to help me. He said that he will talk to the area commander or.someone like that and when everrything is set, I should come to Ojodu berger to collect a letter to assist me. Later he told me that I should send him recharge card so that he can call the commander, which I did. The last time I called the so callef VIO officer was on sunday and. he told me that whenever he gets to the commander, he will call me and that I should go and arrange 50k wHenever he call, that I should come to Ojodu Berger with the money. That.was the last time I heard from him. so who is scamming who here? Please fellow Nairalanders I am here to look for solution to my problem and not to engage anyone in a tit for tat. Selling that car is a last resort as I stated in my original post because it is a breadwinner. Ydu can check my previous post last year to confirm @ obinoscopy, you are a well respected moderator. How I wish you had taken a more objective and liberal view of the subject. But still I need your help sir. |

Re: VIO In Lagos Impounded His Car Over Fake Drivers License by MeAboki(m): 9:18pm On Oct 23, 2013 |
Haven't read other ppl's comment, so I could be repeating what someone had already said; IMO they had no right to impound your vehicle (assuming your vehicle documents were intact and up to date) since its not the vehicle that committed the offence but you, your person, who was not covered to drive with a fake licence. Although I am not a lawyer, however, I believe they were not entitled to impound your car but only arrest and prosecute you for the driving offence you committed. I suggest you therefore contact a lawyer to look into the legality of their conduct in this matter, chances are that you could probably be the one claiming compensation for wrongful withholding of your property along with all the pain and suffering you endured without your vehicle - good luck. |

Siena: Lots of views, very few constructive suggestions, it's all well and good to say God will see this guy through, but why not back up prayer with action? We should be our brother's keeper here. Next time, we could be the ones in trouble, regardless of where we reside. @Sienna Thanks. The people at mushin said they will do it for 80k, the one that @kayralph directed me to said that he can sort it out for 50k, but another nairalander have directed me to another person whom I will be meeting in the morning. I will let you know the outcome Thanks. |

tjpoet: every driver license for now is fake since VIO r campaigning for the new generated driver license. They even condemn the ones bn produced by their oga at the top. That's nigeria strategy of marketing a new product If your previous license was original and you went through due process in obtaining it, then no law official can claim it is a fake. I have been using one license number in my life(| have witnessed 4 different designs now) since I got the first one years ago and I have always renewed it going through due process in any state I find myself. i.e You go to state revenue office, pay the fees, visit FRSC for your appointment, they take your picture and you sign on their pad. The plastic comes out whenever it comes out. Problem was a lot of people wanted to be having the plastic in 1 week and end up getting fakes and even paying above the required fees. I must say that even with the new one, nothing has changed in the process except that because people are now compelled, there is now more human traffic at the centres causing delays. I last renewed in January this year and still did not pay above the required fees, in fact I paid online with my debit card. Of course the touts won't have their way with me at their Ikeja, Lagos office. My only experience with VIO officials trying to claim my license was fake because I renewed in a state other than original issuing state was an embarrassment to them. I exposed their own ignorance to them and made all those who thought they would "eat" to realize their being silly. @Post, please do not try to go through "short-cut" you my end up paying more along the way as once you "settle" one, you will have to "settle" a chain of people including the gate man. Send an sms to Engr. Toriola, the Chief of the VIS in Lagos, do not try to put blame, or be overly sentimental about the behaviour of his men. Just make a plea and ask him for some leniency. Let him know how much you have and even the value of the car He can use his discretion to waive some charges for you. The officers actually have the powers to use their discretion to even let you go without fine if you are remorseful. An sms like; Sir, I want to ask for leniency on my car impounded on xxxxx date but due to my being bed ridden bla bla bla, I am being asked to pay Nxxxxx amount but I only have Nxxxxx. My car is at your xxxx station it is a 19xx Nissan xxxx. He will respond, that I am certain of. Do not pay bribe at this point again like I mentioned. His numbers are; 0702xxxxxxx and 0803xxxxxxx (Modified) Please sms only and for other people having the number, do not abuse it by calling him at odd hours or for frivolous/trivial issues. He freely gives out his numbers in public and that is why I have posted it here. @poster, please let us know as things are going on so we can know what more to do. brosss: |

The bolded above is true: I have had several different reissued licenses and they all bear the same number that I got for my very first drivers license (the laminated one in the 90s). I originally got mine when on holiday in the East, because in those days (just like now), Lagos centres were always crowded and busy when you need to get something done and my current license (which I have just gotten renewed after going through a marathon at Ojodu worthy of Guantanamo Bay) still bears that number. The poster is right though: sometimes when you went to the FRSC office and paid them to give you a license, they'd just print out one for you without sticking it in their central database and now that the silly sods have changed the damn thing again, they simply brand everything as fake. |

Gboliwe: Maybe you Have not been following the thread all along. if you are talking about the @kayralph vio officer, he told me that he need to talk to the commander to confirm the 50k deal but then I have not heard from him even after sending him recharge card. Bros please help me if you can. I am om my way to Alausa right now based on the efforts of fellow nairalanders. I will update you when I am back @ others, In my original post, I stated that selliing the car is a LAST option because for now the car provides me with a means of livelhood. I use it for daily runs etc. On my post in november 2012 I advertised on Nairaland about that vehicle However. I will rather sell it than to lose it completely. |

@ all, I have just left Alausa and the officer that fellow Nairalander referred me to have reduced the demurrage from 113k to 15k after personally explaining my plight to him. I have 10k with me and off now to computer village to sell my phone to complete the balance. I thank Nairaland family and all, who have contributed to help me solve this problem and the moderators for helping make it Frontpage, without which I would not have the necessary exposure. Those VIO boys on the road might be devil, but meet the senior officers in the office and you will be seeing a different class of people, very courteous, polite and kind. Trust me, I will come here at Nairaland to wash the car when it gets released. 1 Like |

Congrats @Alex72!!! We are definitely glad to have been of help. However, I want to implore all not to abuse the channel we used so that it can be useful to another person in future. Like I thought of, those N50k guys only wanted to make some money for themselves, bribery is so entrenched in the system. Congrats once again and please follow due process in all things so that you won't end up with "fakes" in a bid to go through shortcut. |
