The group said Mr Al-Mustapha is a brave soldier

A group, the Northern Emancipation Network, has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to reinforce his administration’s war against corruption by appointing Hamza Al Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to late dictator, Sani Abacha, as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The group made the call at a press conference addressed by its Coordinator, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, who described Mr Al-Mustapha as a ‘brave, fearless and honest intelligence officer’ capable of taking the administration’s corruption war to the desired level.

“While we commend Mr President’s committed war against corruption, we advise him to reinforce the EFCC with an equally committed and dedicated head like Major Hamza Al Mustapha who is capable of moving the graft war to the desired level,” he said.

The group said corrupt politicians particularly the “bankrupt northern political leadership” are already jittery with the release of Mr Al Mustapha from prison after 14 years of incarceration.

According to the group, even after going through 14 years of unjust persecution in the hands of these people, Mr Al-Mustapha is not an officer known............

who described Mr Al-Mustapha as a ‘brave, fearless and honest intelligence officer’ capable of taking the administration’s corruption war to the desired level.

Why are we quick to suggest "confrontation" and "intimidation" approach as a go-getter for problem resolution in society?

Given these attributes it sounds like Al Mustapha should be sent to Maiduguri to eliminate bokoharam, than sitting in Abuja and using the privilege of office abusively to target and eliminate party opponents.

We tried same approach here in Nairaland by putting fearless and brave, no-nonsense moderator Ikenna on the mantle of authority to fight tribalism and ethnicity and force all of us in Nairaland into a unity that the Nigerain nation has failed in over 100yrs to do, we saw what a mess it turned out to be. He was succeeded by another fearless and brave, no-nonsense moderator and here we are, worse off for it.

When are we going to appreciate the benefit of negotiation as a value-added component of social contract and start appointing people with brains for managing conflict of interest?

Look closely at the Yoruba model, no other region is as politically volatile as Western Nigeria - its a hotbed of political conflicts and yet they are most successful in negotiating compromise and creating win-win outcomes that ultimately does not resolve the interpersonal disputes of the principals but secures and preserves the social order and the political mandates. How do they do that?

Appointing al Mustapha to EFCC is a dangerous concept and must be opposed by all means. There is no one here who is familiar with Al Mustapha track record that will disagree that this guy is over-ambitious and self centered, very ego-driven. Technically, al Mustapha is a soldier of fortune - a mercenary! He is available to serve the highest bidder in exchange for inclusion in National politics. He is the perfect candidate for any ambitious group in search of an implant in corridors of power. He will be turned to a double agent. In a country beset with threats and militancy, Mustapha ought to be monitored and surveilled, not rewarded and put in a seat where bokoharam or disgruntled military officers, for instance, can be empowered with deeper foothold to capsize what is left to get us a limp to 2015.
