Are the mechanics you deal with
reliable?
Any sign of hesitation in shifting , say ,
anything from 1 second and greater
when your car is shifting from Neutral -
> Drive, is a sign of a worn
transmission.
It doesn't mean its going to break down
on you immediately, but transmissions
aren't always a part of routine checks.
And it can be glossed over much of the
time. You should check your
transmission fluid (Refer to your service
manual or get a mechanic to check with
you present) . If your fluid is a pinkish
red, you're fine , if its getting to a dull
yellow , black , or even worse has
flakes in it , thats most probably the
cause of your problem.
Also, the transmission filter may be
clogged, causing some issues with
automatic shifting.
At the end of the day, automatics DO
degrade over time - depending on how
they've been driven, and the part you
DON'T want to deal with (and most
people will tell you this) is the gearbox.
Swapping out a gearbox is extremely
costly, and oftentimes not practical for
the car in question.
However if you've gotta fix it , you've
gotta fix it!
If you've ascertained it is the gearbox
that is the issue , and nothing else
mentioned above, you might want to
consider selling your car 'as is'.
