I often wonder if our leaders(Govt) sees a different reality from what we all see. I see no way the policy would make life better for Nigerians. They, the policy maker can easily afford any import duty imposed on their 2014 Armoured benz Jeep while the populace are left with begging finance houses to approve to finance a new zero safe Jinseng Saloon car. One wonder what is done with the Billions customs currently rakes into the govt purse on a daily basis? Very easy for them to squander since Nigerians only focus on "OIL MONEY". |

taharqa: So India, and other nations like China and Brazil, waited until 'home made cars were available' b4 they started instituting Tariff structures in order to protect its local Auto industry, right?? These countries knew quite well that If they put in place laws that guarantee the quality of home made cars, workers rights, and make these cars affordable, automatically, their citizens will patronize them... Don't you ask yourself why is Ford Sooo Cheap in UK, aswell as vauxhall and Skoda... These are home made brands assembled in the UK, in India, Tata sells cars that cost $1000... One thing most Nigerians fear about home made cars is its Safety... Do we have strict enforced laws that guarantees safety of any product in Nigeria Kudos to Nafdac but dnt forget Dora had to seek the help of international organizations to combat fake drugs.... Our government is taking safety of Nigerians for granted, and that has to stop... And if they dnt do nothing, we'll stop them by any means...... Enough said |

Are they increasing tariffs across the board or on just new cars? If they increase tariffs on new cars, one can understand that the policy may protect local manufacturers, if the policy is properly phased in. Whose interest will they be ptotecting by increasing tariffs on older cars? The policy is similar to the oil subsidy saga. The benefit goes to the President's cronies while the masses suffer. 1 Like |

Imported cars: Reps fault FG on higher tariff OCTOBER 16, 2013 BY JOHN AMEH, ABUJA 4 COMMENTS Members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday disagreed with the Federal Government’s decision to raise tariff payable on cars imported into the country. The new tariff regime, a fallout of the government’s Automative Industrial Policy Development Plan, implies that Nigerians will pay heavier tariff on cars they import into the country than previously obtained. The aim of the policy is to discourage imports and encourage the setting up local car assembly plants and drive the supply chain in the country. The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga, indicated two weeks ago that the new regime was expected to kick off on October 4. The lawmakers, however, failed to agree on the relevance of the policy on Wednesday in Abuja. The Minority Leader of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, observed that higher tariff on cars would be an “added burden” on “impoverished Nigerians.” He also argued that there was no country where government would begin to tax its citizens ahead of a policy that was yet to take off. |

To me this policy is senseless at this time. first they must be able know the primarily reason why investors are not encouraged to come to Nigeria. First the necessary infrastructure are not in place, Power, good transportation system - means of moving goods from one part of the nation to another (where there is the means, it comes as a high cost) which of course will increase their cost of production as compared to other part of the world, then necessary tax relief that will encourage them. Nigeria already has one of the highest import tax, and tarrif, so I should have expected a govt that has the masses in mind, to first make Power supply available( so the industries will no bear the extra cost of generating power for themselves), provide substantive tax relief including import tax relief of the raw materials for the auto-industries for a given period to enable them get well established, with all these, their overall cost of production will not be as high as it will be giving the present state of infrastructure in the country. This will also reduce the cost of the cars the will produce. Over Govt is only interested in collecting and collecting without minding the effect it will have on the masses. Increasing the Tarriff to me is not the solution to the problem of the auto-industry in nigeria. The problem is majorly the high cost of doing business in Nigeria. That should be tackled first! 1 Like |

great1: If Jonathan Dare Increase Tarriffs on imported cars, he should forget returning back to Aso Rock.. Seems like he doesn't care about the masses, how can he on one hand increase the age of cars imported into the country and on the other hand increase import duties...Until homemade cars are made affordable like in India, he shuld know that not everyone can afford these new cars...Yep! U made point but he made a "nice" move. Nigeria is now serving as World Dust Being and something need to be done about it. You said somthing about job opp, this is the greatest way of providing job opp for the masses. All hail Mr President. |

victorazy: This is not the greatest way to create jobs for the populace. The greatest way to do so is by building a solid network of good roads in Nigeria, providing stable power supply, improving the security of country, developing the broadband internet infrastructure, and improving the public education sector. Doing all these things creates an enabling environment that invariably attracts investors to establish industries. At the very least stable power and good roads should have been in place before this policy was instituted. |
