Prof. ZUBRA: I believe the candidate should have chosen if it was to be a direct/indirect speech It could be 1. Our parents said 'they have tried very hard to preserve our cultural heritage' or 2. Our parents said that they have tried very hard to preserve our cultural heritage The 'tried very hard' part is another story altogether |
Re: Is This Statement Correct? by ProfZUBRA: 1:43pm On Oct 23, 2013 |
bukatyne:I got you right but the question is not about direct or indirect speech, the whole question goes thus:Our parents say that they have tried very hard to preserve(underlined) our cultural heritage but that we have done everything to____it.So the antonym of preserve is the answer |
Re: Is This Statement Correct? by bamidelemedals(m): 1:46pm On Oct 23, 2013 |
It should be "our parents said that they had tried very hard to preserve our cultural heritage" |

Prof. ZUBRA: Above is the OP Prof. ZUBRA: You did not ask the antonym of preserve, you asked if a statement is wrong. I believe the question has options, post them and let's see |

I think it should be 'said' to complement the verb tried. But wot of other scenario likes, the bible says, he died for our sin'... kind of confused. |

b03liberty: I think it should be 'said' to complement the verb tried. But wot of other scenario likes, the bible says, he died for our sin'... kind of confused.Leave the bible. It is assumed that what the bible says is a word from God to mankind from the time of creation to the end of time! What then? |

Prof. ZUBRA: Oh, I see Our parents say... it means it is a continuous saying... they are still saying it i.e. like a proverb/constant e.g. the sun sets in the west. we can't say it 'setted' because it is a contact and will happen for ever 'Our parents say' and 'our parents said' are both correct. it depends on the context. 1 Like |

bukatyne:I understand you better but I'm not convinced,I'm not saying the statement is wrong because I know my limit in English Language but I want to know the reason for using 'say' instead of 'said' 1 Like |

Our parents say................... "SAY" is in a form of being continuous........just like "OUR PARENTS ADVISE THAT....... Here, our parents will keep advising us from time to time.......same is applicable to "OUR PARENTS SAY...........cos they will keep "saying".......it's continuous |

Re: Is This Statement Correct? by slap1(m): 7:43am On Oct 25, 2013 |
Prof. ZUBRA:It is correct. Present continuous tense. It means that our parents have not stopped saying it. If you replace the verb 'say' with a verb phrase, it will be: ''Our parents have been saying. . .'' That shows you that the action of saying that thing is still in progress. If the verb is in the past tense (said), it means that our parents said it before, in the past; but they don't say it again. In this case, the verb phrase would be: have said. . . So the reason for using 'say' instead of 'said' is because 'say' shows that our parents are still saying it, while 'said' shows that they no longer say it. Do you get it now? |
