Political Zoning: Symbol Of Unity Or Disparity? by floma07(m): 2:19pm On Oct 30, 2013
The unity of this great nation can be traced back to 1914, when a certain Lord Fredrick Lugard sanction the unification of the then Northern and Southern provinces into a single entity called Federal Republic of Nigeria.
However, Nigeria is said to be currently united and i personally hope for many years to come. But the fact remain that, the fundamental unity of this nation had been undermined by several factors such as; tribalism, religious bigotry, favouritism, bad governance, issues of revenue allocation formula among others.
In awareness to these, Government and Stakeholders are trying to curb these social menace via public awareness, enlightenment, campaigns, religious and youth forums. Even with these many are still not happy and all effort seems to prove abortive. Then it came the Almighty Master Plan (Zoning) from one political party; a key to bridging the gap between the majority and the minority, promote equal representation, better governance and connote unity. However, to Dr. Dele Cole (August 1, 2010) who said "It would be facile to assume that zoning would solve all the problems of the minorities. It won't. Good governance, transparency, strict accountability, fair play, equal and level playing grounds are all necessary conjuncts to a better Nigeria". But, the question is, do zoning serves as a symbol of unity and eliminate all forms of discrimination or gives room for regional disparity in the quest for national development?.....
