The House of Representatives on Wednesday asked the Federal Government to begin the rehabilitation of River-Niger bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, to avoid an imminent national disaster.

It said the bridge, which was built in 1962, had remained without maintenance despite media reports warning of its imminent collapse.

According to the House, the heavy vehicular traffic on the bridge and the cracks on it were ominous signs that should not be ignored.

Its resolution followed a motion by Mr. Chidoka Obinna, representing Njidoka federal constituency of Anambra State and 68 others.

Obinna had drawn the House’s attention to last week’s comment by Dr. Baba Ahmed, a former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, currently in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, that the bridge might collapse soon, due to neglect.

The House said, “We urge the Federal Government to begin immediate rehabilitation and strengthening of the bridge.”

It also advised the government to “direct the Ministry of Transport (Works section) to conduct regular inspection and maintenance work on all our bridges across the country at period intervals.”

like thats the only infrastructure that needs rehabilitation in the country?Even the reps themselves need one

though long overdue, still a good development, at least something is about to be done bout it, lets encourage them

i doubt they know anything like that, they dont use it
i doubt if politicians from that region go 'home'
they stay put in abuja, enjoyin the infrastructure leaving their region to rot

and they suddenly wake up and remember the bridge they left alone all this while.
