Strictly for the information of Nairalanders and our families. Pls spread this news and let your loved ones and friends get informed about it: How are you Preparing for Sunday’s solar eclipse? According to an article on Space.com entitled: “How to Safely Observe Sunday’s Solar Eclipse”: “Here is a helpful reminder for new eclipse chasers: be safe. A fraction of a second of magnified, unfiltered sunlight will sear your eye’s retina irreparably. Imagine a horrible sunburn on your eyeball. Your eye cannot grow new layers and (peel off) the (burnt) ones like your skin tissue can, so staring directly at the sun is dangerous without the protection of safety equipment used by veteran sky watchers and astronomers.”- See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/preparing-sundays-solar-eclipse/#sthash.KTNc2t2V.dpuf . Because of the sensitivity of this issue, can the Moderator kindly put this on the front page? I believe all of us can duly be educated and informed of the eclipse, especially for those that have not experienced it before. 2 Likes |

It is never safe to look directly at the Sun except during a total eclipse; a partial or annular eclipse, even when the Sun is mostly covered, can still cause permanent eye damage, even though you might not feel any discomfort. There is no pain when the retina is being burned, and the resulting visual symptoms do not occur until at least several hours after the injury has occurred - by which time it is far too late. Looking at the Sun through any kind of optical aid (binoculars, a telescope, or even a camera's viewfinder) is extremely dangerous, and can cause permanent blindness. Sunglasses do not provide anything like adequate protection, as they do not block the wavelengths of light which are likely to damage your eyes, or reduce the intensity of the visible light sufficiently. Viewing the Sun indirectly, by projecting its image onto a screen, is far safer. You can make a projector with a simple pinhole. However, never look through the projector -- only look at the image on the screen. note that even the bucket of water reflection ish is still not safe Another easy way is to crisscross your fingers waffle style to the sunlight, which will project the partial eclipse on the ground in front of you, If you're near a tree, look underneath the sun-dappled canopy of leaves, and you might be able to see the projections of countless mini-eclipses on the ground. You can also get a piece of cardboard, punch hole in it with a nail, and then angle the cardboard to project the sun's light on another piece of cardboard. "You'll see a projected image … when the sun goes into eclipse, you'll see a crescent The smaller the hole, the sharper image you can get. http://www.hermit.org/eclipse/what_safety.html 12 Likes |

Yeah, well.. It's pretty too late! FG won't do a fire brigade approach to this. Infact they careless about the citizenry as much as they careless about corruption.. Bottom line, no body cares! Thanks for the info though! Quite educational. 6 Likes |

I'm once a victim of eclipse eye burn, for months I couldn't identify blue from green, and red from pink. So be warned! After a while God in His infinite mercy healed me. 3 Likes |

If you must look directly, you need a glass as dark as those used by welders! The nearest alternative is "smoking" a piece of glass by putting it in a smoky flame to get a thickly covered bit of glass. Even so use your discretion to judge if its adequate. Good luck looking and I hope you guys can still see nairaland at the end of tomorrow. |
