IN China recently, there was an outrage when a hospital requested for female virgins’ blood, that researchers needed it for studies on the human papilloma (HPV), which is usually transmitted through sexual contact. According to the report, Peking University Cancer Hospital in China put out the request for female virgins between the ages of 18 to 24. Guan Jiuping, the hospital’s spokes woman, said virgins’ blood is helpful because risk for virus is low among women who have not had sex. Guan said: ‘’So far, only 50 self-proclaimed virgins have donated their blood to science,’ but that, ‘the number of actual virgins (even among the 50), may be smaller.’’ The above threw a searchlight to the rate of declining virgins across the world. And led us to ask if truly there
are still virgins in Nigeria, say among young adults up to 20 years? We spoke to people living in different parts of the country and their responses reveal a lot about our sex culture in present day Nigeria, despite the supposed alarming boom in sex. A Nollywood actress, Blessing Patrick, says: ‘’Yes, there are still virgins
in Nigeria. I know of people who are. I can even use myself as an example. I lost my virginity at age 21 because I felt that was the right time for me. My younger sister is over 20 and she is still a virgin!’’ At what age should a young lady or young man lose his or her virginity? Her reply: ‘’There is no specific time. The important thing at that point should be the person’s readiness to face the consequence; a lady at that point should ask herself if she would be able to take care of herself afterwards. She must be sure that she has found the right person that she wants to give herself to because at the end of it, she may become pregnant. She must be prepared not to regret it. ‘’At the same time, from people I know, many people who lost their virginity never planned it. And it affects ladies much later
in life depending on how they lost their virginity. So I’ll advise every girl who is at that stage to be sure of what she wants to do. It is better when it is marriage time, but it is not in all cases that anyone that you give your virginity to must marry you. Even some men say they do not want to marry virgins!’’ Soul E, a hip hop musician, believes that there are still virgins of over 20 in today’s Nigeria. ‘’That is for sure. It is just that virgins are well trained girls, so people don’t see them outside like that. It is mostly the bad girls that people see everywhere because the good girls, the virgins, are mostly in-doors; they do not go out like that. And that is the truth. The responsible girls are found inside their fathers’ houses; it’s the other girls are found everywhere.’’ He added: ‘’Let us not deceive ourselves; there are virgins in Nigeria at
ages that are even above 20. I have seen a virgin at 36 here! She had not slept with any man. It is not about the age, because I have also seen girls that are not virgins at age 12. ‘’I am not in any position to decide for anybody what age they should lose their virginity (laughs), but I feel it is matured for a teenager to get into relationship. Once they get into the university. That is my personal opinion. A girl in the university has every right to look for a boyfriend. That could also be the time to do whatever they want to do, but that’s my opinion. If I have a daughter in the university who tells me that she has a boyfriend, all I’ll do is to advise her to know what she’s doing. That’s all.’’ For Marvina, one of the Unilag artistic twins called TWICE, there are virgins for sure. She added: ‘’I really do not know what particular age a girl or boy for that matter should lose their virginity. I don’t think there is any particular age for that (laughs). ‘’It is very easy to keep one’s virginity in Nigeria. It is a matter of personal choice. However, there is a high risk of anyone losing virginity in Nigeria early. Keeping one’s virginity is really good. Waiting for marriage before having sex, is the best thing any girl can ever give to herself. It is the best gift a girl could ever give herself.’’ Larai Adamu, public affairs commentator, says: ‘’I am 26 years old, and I am not a virgin. In my own case, I lost my virginity when I was that age. I was still my daddy’s pet, my daddy’s girl. My friends felt that I should ‘wake up’ to life. They said it was like a sickness being a virgin. They said I should go out and get a man to get my virginity off for me. ‘’And that was what I did! Though I don’t think like that anymore. It is a very good thing for girls not to lose their virginity before marriage. It gives you an upper hand in marriage, and your husband will feel so secured and will love you more. Parents should enlighten their children about it. It is very vital in marriages. I wish I have not lost mine.’’ Beatrice Ekpeyong, a student, says: ‘’I am 23 and I am proudly a virgin. Most of my friends who have lost their virginity tell me that it is a good thing to have kept it. They tell me that if they have the chance to redo everything they had done, they would want to be virgins. I am keeping it till my wedding night. I believe that virginity should still be related with marriage. God will be involved, and it will be a pure thing.’’ A Relationship Consultant, Revd. Oladipo Isreal, says: ‘’I strongly believe that we still have virgins in Nigeria. I strongly believe that. It’s important based on the scripture. However, in today’s 21st century, human beings, Nigerians so to say, that are looking for virgins, are not even virgins themselves. So one, if you are a virgin fine, you can demand and look for a virgin. But if you’re not one, don’t look for one, okay! Because we have to be sure as much as possible that we blend together, so what you can’t give, you don’t demand for it. So I strongly believe that people can demand for it if they are one, but if they are not one, they have no right to demand for it. ‘’Virginity is very important. We have several scriptures in the Bible that people can just go through and read. We can really say it is relative because of the problem we have with the media, the internet; most of our young ones are
exposed to so many things for example that we adults now, were not used to. These days, a child of 10 years old knows what an adult of 30 years knows. thenationonlineng.net/new/still-20-yr-old-virgins/
