A CALL TO A RETURN TO A SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL ACCULTURATION:PRESENTED BY OBEYI ALOYSIUS ABACHOR.THE TERM AGRICULTURE: As the name implies,is derived from two Greek words "Agro "meaning "farm" and "culture" meaning to cultivate.So Agriculture can be simply defined as the cultivation of land for food and other agro-allied products for the utilization of meaningful sustenance of man.Of old, our fore-parents were into subsistence farm, hunting,carving,etc,for their comfort and were able to carter for all within their households.There was a good division of labor among each household.Then a man can marry comfortably as many as he could and pro-creates as many children as could to ease labor.Then men were strong and full of pride and could boast of whatever be it monies,food or whatsoever.Today man isn't same as yesterday, due to his laziness kind of.Due to modern farm mechanization ,man can no longer do most of the things he knows best.Man now migrates to the cities for white-cola jobs leaving agriculture to die a natural dead,though agriculture as we all know remains the ultimate.The government on the hand choose oil and it's allied products to agriculture not minding the fact that through agriculture we build and construct all around us.The government in other sustain a living went into importation of foods from other neighboring countries knowing too well that man must be alive to carried out orders.These lead to city migrations,theft, robbery,and other socioeconomic vices.When the then military government of Gen. Obansonjo in 1978 sees the crucial need to food and its' importance did embark on a program tagged"Operation Feed the Nation"(O.F.N) to fight starvation which actually brought man back to agricultural activity slightly.Various governments as in the case of Nigeria, had introduces so many empowerment programs to alleviate starvation in the country.THE BENEFITS OF AGRICULTURE:1.It creates employment for the youths.2.It creates income.3.With timber we can much constructions.4.Clothes and leather are gotten from fibers and animal skin.5.Mining is a part of agricultural activities.6.Through its' natural vegetation drugs are produced.7.Foods and drinks are gotten.8.It provides shelter. 9.It helps in boosting the economy of a state.10.It brings about a meaningful livelihood.WHAT OUGHT TO BE DONE TO BOOST AGRICULTURE:1. The government at all tiers of government should encourage the youths to embark on agricultural activity.2.Agriculture should be seen as a way of sustainable avenue to our economy. 3.It should be given great priority by all.4.It should be seen as a means of revenue generating methodology. 5.A mechanized way farming will help in boosting agriculture.6.Individual interest should be put in place to obtain maximum productivity.7.There should proper funding.8.There should be good networking road linking each farmstead. 9. There should be proper maintenance culture on farm implements. 10.A proper Health facility should be put in place to enhance good health. Should all these be put in place by all, agricultural activities could ease the stress we are into and can also alleviate poverty in the country and bring about a sustainable economy.
