naiwalam:

you are very shallow. so if america believes africa should belong to them, they then have the moral right to kill everybody in africa to take possesion of it? you dont seem to get that despite your opinion, others are equally entitled to theirs.

using force because you can muster it is not the attribute of a reasonable person.

it is very obvious gowan went into his "police action" because he had gotten the backing of two super powers to crush the biafrans. we saw how the mighty nigeria behaved itself when bakassi was "stolen" and they could not get world power support.

once again, using power because you can muster it is not the sign of a reasonable person. what if biafra had been the side to gain such superpower support, would gowan had had the liver to go ahead with a war against her?

hero ko. bully ni.
This shows you lack knowledge of history. Let the truth be told. Gowon tried all he could to avoid the war, it was Ojukwu that was adamant and bent on going to war because of his ego to become Head of State at all cost putting the lives of his people on the line. He lied to Igbos and the world that they were ready for the war but in actual fact, they had no enough weapons which later resulted to the use of matchets by the Biafrans to fight the war. Was Ojukwu visionary to have called for war without taking stock of his military might and match it side by side with that of his opponent? Ojukwu was a well trained army officer and well read, one would not expect such man to take a huge risk as that which lead to the death of thousands of Igbos especially women and children. And to worsen it all, the 'brave' man absconded to thin air while his kins men were killed in battle. A REAL man does not run away from battle, he fights to the end and die for what he believes in (he should have read about Alexander the Great, King David in the bible etc, these men never absconded during war, they fought till the end). There is a popular saying "a man who is not ready to lay down his life for his people is not worthy of the title of his household". It is on records that machineries were deployed by the Biafrians (from France) and got the backing of France and China during the war but Nigeria fought the war all alone without international support. It also on record that Nigeria is the only country in Africa that fought and ended her civil war without foreign soldiers on ground to support or for peace mission. Gowon, at his very young age at that time, made history. He is truly a leader and an intelligent one at that. No victor, no vanquish, they term the war but we all know the truth.

with education, you are able to broaden your mind and understand and be able to achieve understanding of one another and resolving your problem not through religious sentiments but through rational discourse with your colleagues

Abagworo

If I must judge based on prudence and patriotism, then I'll score Abacha highest based on his ability to manage Nigeria with oil selling at $11 per barrel, creating Bayelsa State and construction and reconstruction of most federal roads, stable value of Naira and zero borrowing.

D sage:

May God bless you, in a normal society, a person like Gowon shouldn't be seen as ICON let alone talking about affairs of our dear country.

Nigeria should DISINTEGRATE or go back to REGIONALISM. This kind of Federalism is notting but impediment to development. What do we expect from a federal state where local-govts are useless or lack constitutional power? A country where FG takes more than 50% of allocation revenue? A country where money is senselessly giving to law-makers who're barely know in their various constituency? Etc.

@debeey87, you need more education and enlightement, or better still get out of your cave and see what they called good leaders in the developed societies.

what do you expect from a society drowning in mediocrity like Nigeria

Magic Bishop: It is obvious that only the good die young. You just have to look at all the useless old men we call leaders today from Gowon to Obasonjo, Buhari to thiefnibu and co.

Retard......why not call GEJ and his cohorts in power. Stealing oil and ptotecting militants

sammyzacks: My Igbo friends who are mad with Gowon should understand that:
1. The war was truely not about Biafra or the Igbos, but about Ojukwu and his ego.Ojukwu might have been many things but definitely not hero or a good leader of his people.
2. Gowon tried everything to avoid the war. Most of us if in his shoes would do everything possible to make sure Nigeria never disintegrate under our command as head of state.
3.ironsi, kaduna and even zik all believed in Nigeria.
4.Gowon is not evil, he acted as a military commander under the circumstance. His background as a child and as an adult was and is totally Christian. If you listen to his speeches during the war, you will see his good heart.even after the war he started Nigeria on a just path and never stole money for himself.Till today his morality is intact.

yeah right!!! but aburi didn't say Nigeria should disintegrate.. it only made provisions for a weak center and strong regions.

you can't say he didn't steal when he said Nigeria's problem is how to spend Money.

all this was at a time when none of the Rs in his 3R Post war strategy was working.. especially the reconstruction part.

a typical example is the failure to revive the oji thermal station that took care of the electrical needs of the eastern region before the war.

neglecting such an important detail when he doesn't know how to spend the country's excess money says a lot about his personality and his 3Rs

You should be the one to go research well. Pls go find the videos of the war (I mean the real videos covered by journalists during the war- video from the Nigerian side and that of the Biafran), watch them and come back let's discuss history. FYI, the videos can be easily assessed in Nigeria or in the UK (and in some specific libraries in the world)

You have proven once again your ignoramus absurdity and lack of intellectual reasoning required of any sane man in discourse such as this. You hail Ojukwu as your hero and Igbo leader and here in this your latest post, you don't see him as a man the Igbos should listen to, is that not confusion? A leader is one who his followers listen to and since he (Ojukwu)could not influence you people then, he was not worthy to be called a leader. So why the whole fuss about him? Can't you see that you are confused and that you don't know what you are doing? Anyway, I'm not surprised at your stupidity after all, Ojukwu used his people to fight for his own personal interest which you are all blind to see. You lost the battle and you will continue to loose it because you lack sense.

But who would believe that you are truly Ibibio? And if by any chance you are truly Ibibio, you must be the type who has refused to learn from history. Without fear of what shall be the reaction of the Igbo, those who joined up to fight Biafra can chase you into the Atlantic Ocean overnight, in order to have unrestrained control of your land with whatever resources, if any, it holds.

Guy make we leave this biafra things, they are all bullshit I'm proudly IBIBIO and why didnt you put rivers and delta that have close ties with the igbo's in the biafran map ? They have learnt from your igboitic selfish, proud, arrogant and totaliarism character.
The war was not over but igbos had already divided ikwere land amongst themselves, they look at the igbo deltans as second class igbos and they look down on every other tribe, but with all their claimed empty wealth nothing good can be shown on their land and the people who are spoiling their land and cheating the igbos are still their own brothers.
The igbos themselves need a deliverance from their own wickedness and mind you instead of igbos to drive us out of our land we would as we have always done drive and surpress them.
Greedy Bastards.

ubacandid,

Here is one of your early posts on nairaland. "most tribes who are prosperous today was cos of the centralization of government among the three ethnic groups earlier in the country, which gave the edge over others."

Now how did your so-called prosperity come about? Without people who pushed for it, your so-called tribe could not afford to have the 13% you now enjoy which makes you say "Igbos that claimed empty wealth nothing good can be shown on their land"
Ask some SS leaders, they will tell you that the late Ikemba Ojukwu was instrumental to the 13% derivation that brought you the prosperity you now brag about. But do you even know that the 13% is being seriously kicked against by many parts of Nigeria today. Close your eyes and imagine the Igbo you insult joining the chorus for scrapping of that 13%. If that happens, you shall be coming back to Ariaria market by bicycle. Lol.

I cannot put every Ibibio on your strange position, more so, when I know that you have comprehension problems judging from your harsh reaction to my penultimate post where I stated that if the Igbo is not there, they could push you further into the Atlantic ocean and pluck whatever resource in your land, if any. And that is the reality.

Thanks for reclarification man and sorry for my earlier rant, but i believe triabalism is not the main problem of Nigeria as of today, there is greed everywhere liberalisation and enlightenment has opened the door for people, even if we disintegrate the problems would still lie there but truth be told i believe ojukwi had selfish interest for ceassation.

Your apologies accepted, but you committed another political harakiri: late Ojukwu did not secede out of selfishness. He acted to save the Igbo, Ibibio, Ijaw, Efik, etc from pogrom. Those that carried out the pogrom never distinguished between your Ibibio and Igbo - both were targeted amd killed. When Ojukwu died, Niger state governor Babangida Aliyu, and others said that if they were in Ojukwu's position in 1966-1967, they would have done the same thing Ojukwu did then. Try to learn from history.
