ASUU Pospones NEC Meeting Indefinitely :( by Nobody: 2:55pm On Nov 13, 2013
The meeting was suspended to honour Festus Iyayi.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has
suspended its National Executive Council, NEC, meeting
initially scheduled to hold at Bayero University, Kano, on Wednesday. The meeting was suspended indefinitely.

The ASUU National President, Nasiru Fagge, stated this on Wednesday afternoon.
The meeting was suspended because of the death of Festus Iyayi, a former ASUU President, who died in a car accident on Tuesday on his way to the NEC meeting.
Mr. Iyayi was involved in a ghastly auto accident allegedly caused by the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada.

Several members of the executive council from various
universities across Nigeria were already in Kano for the
meeting.
ASUU has been on strike since July 1 and the NEC meeting was to deliberate on the resolutions of various chapters of ASUU on whether the strike should be suspended or not.

This is what I have to say about the postponement.

I think the Nigerian students have suffered for far too much and for too long. We have been sitting at home because of the irresponsibility of the FG to fulfil promises, we have suffered for what we do not even know about.
Should we be held to ransom again for a death that isn't our doing?. It would be unfair to us for ASUU to prolong this strike just cause of Gov. Wada's carelessness. I think ASUU should begin to think of ways to fight it's battles without involving innocent bystanders.
It shouldn't be about them alone all the time.

I just saw this coming...everyone knows they were certain to suspend their strike in the botched NEC meeting as the votes at the congresses suggested but instead of them to just simply make the announcement suspending their strike while they mourn their fallen comrade, they decided to postpone "Indefinitely" which could be later fixed for next year or whenever, meaning yet again we have to continue suffering for what we know nothing about. A classic case of robbing peter to pay paul. *shrugs*

Prof iyayi, see the aftermath of your sudden death, your back is not worthwhile you left a bad omen,&this will forever be on your name that for your sake, teeming Nigeria students were held to ransom to resume back studies to pursuing their dreams!..

Firstly, Prof Iyayi was a learned fellow and man of intellect let's respect him, saying unpleasant things about him can't change the situation on ground.

Concerning the strike, I feel the ASUU story is already getting dramatic, its okay to honor Prof Iyayi which logically should lead to the meeting being postponed for some days at most, but suspending the NEC meeting indefinitely surely isn't the most sensible thing to do now, settling the strike should be their primary focus.

In my opinion they can mourn him for the remaining days of this week and even sunday, then they should hold the NEC meeting either on monday or tuesday before other pretty issues spring up again.

Arrant nonsense! Total rubbish!
If this is what the educational system has been churning out, I support ASUU's bid to revamp the sector thereby saving us from comments like this.
