it is a pity that government at all levels in Nigeria lack basic maintenance culture, which often leads to avoidable accidents.

Fynestboi: Lagos — Eight students of Ajangbadi High School in Iba Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Lagos went into coma after the railing of the two-storey building in the school collapsed.

The incident which caused pandemonium in the school premises occurred at about 10:00 a.m. as the students were leaning on the rail on the second floor of the building.

Vanguard gathered that the rail had shown signs of rust but was not replaced.
Miss Rofiat Ademola, a Senior Secondary School, SSS1 student, said the rail finally gave way on Monday and injured eight of the SSS 3, students.

According to Ademola: “We were in the classroom at about 10:00 a.m. Suddenly, we heard a loud noise.

“We rushed out to see what was happening and saw that some SSS3 students had fallen from the second floor of the building.”

Another student, Mr. Samuel Olasunkanmi, said the rail started showing signs of rust since last school term.

“Despite the bad state of the rail, the students still used to lean on it before it collapsed on Monday.”

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the council, Mrs. Ramota Oseni-Adeyeri who spoke to Vanguard, said only eight students were affected when the rail gave way.
Oseni-Adeyeri said: “The students were rushed to the Iba LCDA Primary Health Centre, PHC, where the medical officers gave them appropriate treatment.

“Of the eight students, only one is still in critical condition at the moment and she was transferred to the Igando General Hospital, Igando, for treatment.”

This Adeyeri's language is annoying. Only eight students! How many should they have been?
Only one in critical condition! So they should have all died first before it's considered serious?
Why do our people not value life? Why make such an insensitive comment?
I am a parent and I can't imagine how it will be a consolation to me that only eight students were affected

This can never happen in a safety conscious society. I hope the Lagos State Safety Commission will expedite action on other schools before fatality is been recorded.

Elliotwiz1: People build schools buildings everyday just with only one motive... Making money, they don't even care about the safety of the people involved. I'm sure the owner of the school must have seen or heard of the rusts yet nothing was done. Experienced something like this when i was in primary school. A section of our school wall cracked and broke off, it was falling to the other side, we saw it and tried to hold it but we could not, luckily the person who was walking on the other side of the wall was big enough to wedge the wall from falling on him. . . But i remember that nothing was done on that wall for days. People tend to show lest interest in things that does not bring quick money. . . I think the ministry of Education should always go around to check on how safe school buildings are and close those not capable of safely holding human beings.
It is a government owned school

This is just one story among numerous ones, when it comes to maintenance Nigeria is down the ladder we lack maintenance culture.

Fashola! renovate public schools in lagos and save our youngsters from hardship

Can you get pictures of the school showing the damaged railing to make your post more real

BTW I thought Lagos has been governed by excellent ACN/APC administrators, Tinubu & Fashola for almost 15 years. Did I miss something

i'm not in lagos now. One of the students is my relative, though her injury is not so severe. The school like other government schools in lagos is begging for maintainance, due to years of neglect by successive APC government.
