@ op you forgot no '8' surnames from the market days. This is common in Igbo land. Where one is given a name(which eventualy, turns out to be the generations' sure name) based on which market day he was born. The market days are:'Eke, Orie, Afor, Nkwo'. So when born on 'Eke' day you are called 'Nweke' meaning, son of 'Eke'

First name can simple be termed as your personal(or parent given name),while your surname is simply your fathers name(or your father's given name by his own father. Dunno if my answer kinda make sense)

if your surname is your father's name then do you think the subject of this thread is correct? 'where surnames can be gotten from' according to your definition, when You're born you automatically get a surname, your father's name, so why is this thread about having surnames when we already have surnames? Extra surnames?
