KingMEXX: Be sure before yu talk. Nigeria has been growing wheat for so many years, just that the volume of products has been low a bit. Here is a link to enlighten yu http://m.allafrica.com/stories/201308200465.html/?maneref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fm%3F%26q%3Dwheat%2Bproduction%2Bin%2BNigeria
Don't lie to people just because GEJ is involved and yu want to protect his image
Growing wheat is only possible in the North, where it is drier.

alnaijiri:

Nigeria is too tropical for wheat farming, just like Europe is too cold in which to grow cassava.

buh that wasn't yur earlier statement. Yu clearly stated earlier that it wasnt possible just because yu wanted to justify GEJ's cassava extravagant bill!!

Make una siddon for house dey take pot-shots and fire flaks at Jonathan. Truth is, farmers of Cassava in Nigeria are hitting the gravy train with the brilliant Agric Minister's initiatives. Cassava, that hitherto neglected crop, is in the news every other day. The other day, Nigeria signed a deal with China to supply that country with Billions of Dollars worth of Cassava chips. Y'all better find ways of keying into the Agric revolution currently staring you in the face. If you can access land in your village, just 5 to 10k can kickstart a Cassava farm. Before you know it, you go become supplier of Cassava to processing plants that produce Cassava flour. Bigger picture : in future, YOU could own a Cassava flour plant. You can benefit from the news above, if you are smart. Open your eyes and minds, people !

If only you knew how much Nigeria is losing by importing wheat flour and how if that foreign exchange is saved the good it will do to our economy in terms of creating job and re-distributing wealth you won't be making this Ignorant statement..

Your emphasis should be,if Cassava flour is replacing wheat let it be of high quality and also nutritious...
AGREED, WE SHOULD ALSO EXPECT

This is a good initiative by the president and it can be more visible if it is made effective.

What you dont know is that you have been eating this bread since last year december. Once you ve eaten bread from major bakeries like shoprite no publicity stunt about it. Its good, better than wheat. You know, cuz you already eat it. Just check what you eat and ask questions. Dont ridicule it cuz of the man who introduced it.

Look man, still doesn't justify the amount put into this.. Honestly, we all are pained when public funds are misused for selfish ends.. This one has not proved otherwise..

on point.. the youths of this country should learn how to look at the bigger picture..

if there's more demand for cassava products, more ppl will go into it.. more money..

maybe soon enough we'll overtake Brasilia as the highest exporter of cassava while reducing our wheat import leading to a positive import exporter ratio

A very cunny way of funding Jonah's 2015 presidential re-election campaign.
A goverment that s not funding yam, rice or wheat production is now chasing bread. This is a symptom of bad governance and executive idiocy.

This is another good news for the agro-industrial sector of the economy, but the fear is the implementation process and how this cash will be managed in such a way that it will reach the target groups and not fall into the pulse of the bureaucrats because government has a history of good policies but with poor implementation.
Well,we still have to believe and be optimistic that at least 60% implementation success rate will be achieved since the process has already began.
Also, this is a wake up call for those who doubting or yet-to venture into farming/agriculture,the future of this country lies in agriculture.Take a bold step today, start with the little you have and dont stay there, always keep progressing till we make our country self-sufficient in food production.

Welcomed development, this year alone much has been achieved in cassava business, there has been vibrant and growing markets for cassava tubers in the areas of processing and utilization esp by industries. This has significantly increased the demand and supply and farmers have been able to make more money. At least cassava market stabilized to appreciable extent this year and this acted as shock absorber to the farmers against crop failure experienced from other arable crops that did not perform well due to bad weather situation.

Fellow Nigerians. Let us get a bit more pragmatic and patriotic. Dismissing the initiative will not help in any way. The issue of wheat importation is a big transnational political and economic issue. Every Nation determines what is good for it. Nigeria has dared the wheat lobbyists by seeking an alternative and we should not continue to defend them. Rather, let us think of how to emancipate our own economy from their stranglehold. One of the ways to hold a person or a nation to ransom is via people's appetite. The earlier we get used to eating what we produce and producing what we eat, the better. The past has not been too pleasant: let us not keep defending it. Let us look forward to some bright things coming. I think we should be positively excited and curious about what good things are in the offing and think of what benefits may accrue to us as individuals and as a nation. I think we should praise Nigeria's president for daring and for believing in possibilities. You see what you think. You possess what you confess. Therefore, think positive, profess/confess positive, and you all will have it.

mooregan: Its a good thing. Most of us saying shouting don't have an idea in this field. Now if we can encourage cassava bread, this will reduce d amount of wheat we import. Though we can't have 100% cassava bread cos there is no gluten in it, it being mixed with wheat floor will reduce d import of wheat. Nigeria was once using 100% barley to brew n so much was spent on importation until d Structural Adjustment Programme(SAP) came n our indigenous Sorghum(guinea corn) was introduced to replace barley in brewing. Though it was rough at d beginning, 2day most beers in Nigeria r made with 100% Sorghum. So its a welcomed development.
tell them o becos madam keeps talkin abt the value chain people should think in these direction

Some Nigerians dont know when good things comes their way. All they do is complain and politicise every good initiative. Smh
I believe this initiative will make the agricultural sector more vibrant and therefore attract unemployed youth and rural dwellers to embrace agriculture.
