SEYI GESINDE takes a look at the recent achievement of Anthony Oyeogbe, a Nigerian Ph.D student of Agronomy, who emerged one of the 25 recipients of Green Talents Award 2013 in Germany.



Anthony Oyeogbe, a Nigerian Ph.D student of Agronomy has emerged a recipient of Green Talents Award 2013. He is one of two African scientists among selected among the 25 Green Talents Awardees 2013. Consequent upon this, he, together with others, went on tour of Germany and they visited top locations in the field of sustainability research during a two-week science forum from October 28 until November 9.

The award prize included a two-week science forum in Germany, access to a deeper insight into the country’s innovation system and opportunity to learn about German state-of-the-art approaches and technologies, and exchange ideas with leading experts in individual meetings.

Ealier before he was shortlisted for the award, Germany’s Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), for the fifth time, had called on young scientist with bright ideas to apply for the prestigious programme “Green Talents - International Forum for High Potentials in Sustainable Development.”

According to the organizers, “over 430 up-and-coming scientists from 80 countries submitted their applications. Out of this impressive pool of talented researchers a high ranking jury of experts selected 25 Green Talents awardees for 2013.”

The jury was particularly impressed by the great importance of Oyeogbe’s research. His interdisciplinary work contributes significantly to realising the vision of a sustainable agriculture which is capable to ensure the livelihood of a growing world population in an ecologically sustainable way.

Recently, the Talents went on tour of Germany and they visited top locations in the field of sustainability research during a two-week science forum.

After this trip, “to deepen their newly created networks, the Green Talents will then be invited to return to Germany for a research stay of up to three months at an institution of their choice in 2014,” the organisers said.

Nigerian Oyeogbe and South African Heinrich Badenhorst are the two only two scientists who emerged the award recipients from Africa.

Oyeogbe is a PhD candidate in Agronomy whose research addresses the need for a global shift from current farming practices to sustainable agriculture systems capable of providing both significant productivity increases and eco-friendly service. His focus is on conservation agriculture in maize-wheat cropping systems for improving productivity and soil health.

Dedicated to the cause of agricultural research, Oyeogbe, has for many years been studying eco-friendly production systems that could be implemented on a large scale in order to meet global food demands. His research focuses on conservation agriculture, which paves the way for a new example of sustainable food production and management system.

Oyeogbe completed his degree in Agronomy in Nigeria and then continued his studies with two master degrees in Soil-Water Management and Cropping Systems and Soil Fertility, in Nigeria and India, respectively. He is currently enrolled in a PhD programme in Conservation Agriculture and Resource-Use Management in New Delhi, India.

His counterpart, Badenhorst has a PhD in Chemical Engineering. One peculiar thing about his course is, as most people are trying to eliminate carbon footprints, Badenhorst instead is redefining them by finding new and innovative ways of using carbon and graphite materials for renewable energy capture and storage.

With an abundance of carbon and graphite materials in South Africa, Heinrich Badenhorst aims to solve two problems at once: take poor quality carbon black, recovered from recycled scrap tyres, and use it to capture solar energy. He is currently enrolled in a PhD programme in Conservation Agriculture and Resource-Use Management in New Delhi, India.

Stressing the importance of Green Talent Programme, Mr Wilfried Kraus, Deputy Director General of a directorate for Sustainability, Climate and Energy in Germany, said it was to tap new ideas from research to tackle the “challenges of our age.”

“These Green Talents are bringing us a fresh breeze from the outside world. They stand for the large number of participants in the contest. They are passionate about the work of science in the country of a renewable energy revolution,” Kraus said.
