Uruguay could become the first
country in the world to nationalise
and legalise marijuana.
On Tuesday,
the Senate will vote on a bill that would make the sale of cannabis for
adults legal and government-
controlled. If passed the price of
marijuana is expected to be set at
around $1 a gram.

President Jose Mujica has spent the
past year campaigning for legalisation as part of a program to reduce drug-related crime. In an interview with a Brazilian newspaper, he said: "We are asking the world to help
with this experience, which will
allow the adoption of a social and
political experiment to face a seri
problem - drug trafficking," he said "The effects of drug trafficking are worse than those of the drugs themselves."

Legalising marijuana means breaking
with the United Nations' 1961 Convention on Narcotic Drugs, ratifie by Uruguay in 1975.

The US has criticised the move, arguing that it is violating international agreements. Y
this strategy as a form of drug control has support among many sectors of Uruguayan society.

Regulacion Responsable (Responsible Regulation), a coalition of prominent
Uruguayan citizens, social and civic
organisations, has been publicising
the government's initiative for over a
