It doesn't matter what is the truth in this case rather, what matters is they think you are keferi. As a matter of fact, a keferi is better but most Northerners think you are a muslim hypocrite. I'd prefer to be known as keferi than a hypocrite. Ask around in your neighborhood and confirm.
